Movie Review : Revati - Showcasing the stigma of the rich and the wealthy

Producer:Victory International
Director:Faroogh A Siddiqui
Cast:Ayub Khan, Gauri, Kashmira Shah, Shreyas Talpade
Music:Jatin - Lalit, Nazakat, Shujat

In this glam sham world of cinema, film like Revati is a rare encounter.  The film is presented by Victory International and directed by Faroogh Siddiqui. The lead players are Kashmira Shah, Kiran Kumar and Ayub Khan. The film is a real life portrayal and is in news for the unusual theme and the author-backed performance of the cast.

The uncongenial slums of Mumbai and the existing people living there are brought to life through this film. It’s a saga of their turmoil and hardship with special specification through Revati, a rag picker dwelling there. It’s her dream that forms the crux of the film. In the process of aspiring her vision of becoming rich, she comes across a wealthy man (Kiran Kumar).  She witnesses and smells what the high society lavish life really means. Getting stimulated by what she sees, she makes up her mind to leave her past and complex life and go for affluence and wealth. But she doesn’t know that the path is full of thorns!

Revati is immature and feeble and falls an easy prey to the deceptive promises and values of the rich. Still she fights back with hostility never succumbing to their needs. She gets a closer view of the bare truths and understands that all that glitters are not gold. She even gets prone to allegations about an illicit relationship with the rich man, his murder, drug trafficking, and prostitution. To guard her modesty from the hungry eyes of the rich, she returns back to where she was!

With a subject that is appealing and interesting Revati also throws light on drugs, prostitution, murder and romance. The film takes of in a very fine manner though the end appears a bit mechanical. Stage by stage episodes of Revati’s life unfolds in an interesting way. But henceforth, unwanted songs, sex and drama follows. The effect and the outcome are not very notable. There are a few moments to hold onto, but for a film it requires much more then some good scenes. Everything flows fine during the first session, but things go haywire post interval.

Faroogh A. Siddiqui doesn’t impress with the direction and screenplay. It is very commonplace. A film of this genre requires a strong impact. The screenplay is boggling. Music by Jatin-Lalit, Nazakat-Shujat hinders the flow of the movie.

Performance wise Kashmira Shah deserves applauds. She endures her role with aplomb. Kiran Kumar within the given dimension appears fine. Ayub Khan, Javed Khan, Prashant, Alok Nath are apt.

Revati is a social film fundamentally on the life of a poor girl. But the prospect of it doing well at the box office is a question in itself. Though the stimulating theme may find many takers!
