Director Anil C Menon, scenarist TA Shahid and popular actor Kalabhavan Mani team up once again after Malsaram to bring Ben Johnson, an action movie that has sufficient dosage of sentiments, songs et al.
Johnson (Kalabhavan Mani), who is a good athlete, is known by the nickname Ben Johnson. He is selected as a Sub-Inspector and opts to go to Muththangakuzhi, a place where nobody prefers to go. But Johnson has some definite motives behind going there. He takes charge at the Police Station at Muththangakuzhi. And on the first day itself, he is brought face to face with the goons of Chandranthody Madhava Menon (Kalasala Babu). It’s Madhava Menon and his brothers who are controlling things in Muththangakuzhi. Madhava Menon’s younger brother Viswanathan (Vijayaraghavan) is a politician who has a group of henchmen at his command. Anyhow Madhava Menon, Viswanathan and their brothers happen to be Johnson’s maternal uncles. But these crooked uncles have always been plotting against Johnson’s father Pathrose (Kalabhavan Mani in a double role), who was a notorious rowdy. And they had got him killed too, with the help of Vettukaadan Velayudhan (Anil Adityan). Anyhow, Johnson is determined not to become a rowdy like his father and it is therefore that he joins the Police force. And at Muththangakuzhi, he meets Gauri (Indraja), a young girl who runs a small shop along with her grandmother (Sukumari). They get closer. Gauri is actually the illegitimate daughter of Madhava Menon. And it was the very same Vettukaadan Velayudhan who had killed Gauri’s mother too. Anyhow Johnson comes to stay at Muththangakuzhi with his mother Lekshmi (Ambika). His friend and Police Constable Swamy (Harisri Ashokan) too gets posted in Muththangakuzhi along with him. Anyhow, with Johnson coming back to Muththangakuzhi, things get changed. Law and order is restored and he suppresses goondas with an iron hand. And he comes to clash with the Chandranthody people too, his maternal uncles. But he has certain people who stand by him. They are the Superintendent of Police Stephen Verghese (Siddique), the ASI Eenasu (Cochin Haneefa) and a relative Govinda Menon (Madhu). And how the forces of evil are met with forms the plot of Ben Johnson.

The character of Johnson is, no doubt, tailor-made for Kalabhavan Mani, who does full justice to the character in his characteristic style. Mani also impresses as Pathrose, the father. Indraja does a good job as Gauri. Anyhow, Kalasala Babu as Madhava Menon, Vijayaraghavan as Viswanathan and Siddique as Stephen Verghese are the ones who score besides Kalabhavan Mani. All the others in the cast too have done their parts perfectly well. Of the songs, ‘Sona, sona, nee onnaam number ...’ has already become popular. Anyhow, director Anil C Menon and scenarist TA Shahid deserve to be appreciated to have come with a film that has the right mix of ingredients to make for a commercial movie which would go down well with fans of Kalabhavan Mani. The film has been produced by Milan Jaleel.
