Producer: Applause, Bhansali Entertainment Director: Sanjai Leela Bansali Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Ayesha Kapur, Shernaz Patel, Dhritiman Chaterji, Nandana Sen Music: Resul Pookutty
The verdict is that, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is as experimental and expansive that he can be. Khamoshi, with which he debuted, was a very sensitive movie on a different note. With Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas he took a magnificent twirl to direct something spectacular. Black his forthcoming release is an unconventional theme revolving around a deaf, dumb and a blind girl and her mentor. It wharfs with touching moments and brings us closer to the obscurity of handicaps. Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee are in the lead roles.
Michelle McNally (Rani Mukerji) succumbed to deafness and blindness within eighteen months of her birth due to illness. Her world is very gloomy as she cannot confide her feelings to anybody and neither can relate to anyone due to her helplessness. Life goes on to become frustrating for her. But then like a ray of hope emerges Debraj Sahai (Amitabh Bachchan). He is the teacher of a deaf-blind school. He is asked to vacate his post due to his weird behavior and drinking habit. The principal of the place forwards him to McNally’s house to train her.
McNally’s intelligence impresses the old man. He plans to normalize her with different tactics unnatural to human beings. Her family makes protests, but they give it up when they see Debraj working wonders. McNally learns her first word and picks up meanings. As if he has imbibed a magical touch on her. Debraj aspires her to leave a normal life like every other human being. But fate wishes otherwise as Debraj gives in to Alzheimer’s attacks. It is the turn of McNally to revive the memory of Debraj. But it is not easy and the job seems impossible! Will there be a miracle to ease out things? Does the battle again the fate wins?
Black reflects McNally’s state of mind that is pensive, thoughtless and null. This was something that Sanjay Leela Bhansali believed in and wanted to direct. The film goes without any songs. The film is something new that the film fraternity and the audiences are going to experience.
