Movie Review : Maha Nadigan (2004)

Producer: Gnanasoundari M
Director: Shakthi Chidambaram
Music: Deva
Actors: Mumtaz, Namitha, Ramesh Khanna, Sathyaraj

Is it right for a Cinema Artiste to became CM? Can Kollywood rule saint George fort? Are two questions that gets answered in detail in this 2 ½ hours film.

The film takes these questions seriously and had tried to find answers by analyzing the questions part by part, just as a mechanic would check vehicles. So far, Sathyaraj has been called as ‘Halwa Nayagan’, after this film he can be called as ‘Asathal Nayagan’! He had given that kind of starting performance in this film. The story goes like this.

The extra artiste Sathyaraj, becomes hero by using cunning methods. Then he started journeying into the path of politics. To get to the top he had to kill many a people and managed to sit in the chair of Chief Minister!

At some point of time, he realizes the mistakes and crimes he had committed to reach the top position, this irks him a lot. So he decides to correct things, he starts with the administration and set everything right.

The director Sakthi Chidambaram and Sathyaraj is an compatible pair by all means. The coming together of this irrepressible duo itself as enough to make this a film a big hit!

We are going a light of Sathyaraj’s histrionics in this film to prove our point. The way he stage manages a suicide attempts of the heroine of his first film as hero, Ettappa and how he uses this to create pre publicity for his film and make it a hit in the process.

When the film became very successful. The way he lies to the media saying that “I am actually from London basically”, bit is a memorable performance.

After ‘befriending’ Mumtaj and promising her that he would marry her. That too in the pressure of Manmohan singh and Sonia Gandhi will preside the whole thing and hold over ‘Thali’ to Sathyaraj to be tied on Mumtaj. This scene is just hilarious to the love!

For the actors who dreams that they can start a party if they can draw big crowd, Sathyaraj gives a fitting answer by saying, “Even the rode side legium seller draws big crowd, can he start a party, just because he can drawn big crowd?

In the scene, where Sathyaraj who doing out know anything but arranged to become a Chief minister, RameshKanna shows him a world map and ask him to spot India in thaat map.

Sathyaraj, just slaps him and say, ‘I will never betray my motherland by showing it to you or anybody else”

The original politician Rajkapoor challenges Sathyaraj that he can act in a better manner than Sathyaraj and repeats the emotionally surcharged dialogues of Veerapandiay Kattapommab at one go. Sathyaraj and Ramesh Kanna tells him that these dialogue are of old fashion. Then they start to mimic the latest trend and puts him off in the process! Like these scenes Sathyaraj makes his present felt through out the film.

If the hero makes an hilarious impact, the heroines makes their ‘presence’ felt by their glamour. They complete each other in showing of their bodies. Namitha wins in this glamour race hands down!

Manoj, have given a memorable performance in his small role. Though he is been just for 15 minutes in the film be makes his pressure felt. ‘Autograph’ Mallika comes as a collector, with thick glasses and well oiled hair style and the saree covering her mid region for a change!

Ramesh Kanna, who was once a famous hero, going to places by car, had gone down in status as the time changes. Fir be is going by a cycle on the road in the back ground, the song ‘Gnabyam Vannde, Gnabgam Vannde’ is played this scene will definitely get claps all around from audience!

The directors, who had acted as directors in this film like, P.Vasu, Visu, P.T.Gajendran are shinning in the director of Shakthi Chidambaram.

Just as giving tablets buried in sweet Banana, the director has given a important and necessary message to the audience in an humorous way. Sakthi Chithambaram should be appreciated for this technique.

This film is a fine mixture of comedy, glamour, sentiments, meaningful dialogues, foot tapping songs, you ask for it, you can get it. All kinds of audience will like this film.

Mahanadigan- Super actor.
