Movie Review : Fiza (2000)

Producer: UTV Motion Pictures
Director: Khalid Mohammad
Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Karisma Kapoor, Neha, Jaya Bachchan(Bhaduri),
Music: Anu Malik

Alas, the much talked about, the much publicized and the much awaited film is released. The Culture Company's Fiza hung the fate of two people, film critic turned director Khalid Mohmmad and Hrithik Roshan who's popularity had reached cult Status after his frist release, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai..,deservingly the two have passed the test with flying colours.

Khalid Mohammed proves his point, but he had to bow down to commercial demands and make compromises, whereby he loses some of its credibility and relevance. Khalid Mohammed gets the best out of his artist and it shows in their excellent performances.

The film has it's pitfalls and shortcomings too. The frist half of the film is racy, which keeps the interest of the viewers alive, but the second half allows down due to unrequired romance and melodrama.

Similarly the climax of the film seems to accomodate his popularity as a star. The other options would surely have been sucide, but atleast it would have been 'hatke'. The film would then have fallen into Karisma's lap and given her a parallel character to that of Nargis in 'Mother India' .The other disturbing factor of the film is the ages of that characters that have not been defined in a convincing manner. The other confusing aspect is the point of view of the film, it fails to define the actual cause of the struggle that the Muslim community faces and thus it fails to express the exact feeling of the masses at large.

Khalid Mohmmed however certainly has defined the character very acutely, so also the relationship between his characters have been handled with great care, it gives the film a wonderfully realistic feel that is completely involving..

The title role of Fiza, played by Karisma, is bound to win all the accoladeos and laurels for her. It has been one of the best heroine rales in recent times. Karisma's role demanded desperation and she has delivered it with all the honesty, it would be no surprise if she fetches all the awards in the coming months.

The other principle character Nishatbi, played by Jaya Bachchan and she comes up with a seasoned performance. The third principle role is that of Amaan, played by Hrithik Roshan which is also the main USP of the film. If Hrithik's frist film made him a star overnight, Fiza makes him an actor. The film belongs to Hrithik, his body language, his diction, his expression, his overall persona deserver all the praise. Hrithik proves with this film that he is more than just a fashionable rage, teen pin-up and sex-symbol.

Good Direction, good performance and a different story beside excellent music scores from such talents as Anu Malik, Ranjit Barot and A. R. Rahman makes this a must see film.
