Bollywood is breaking away from conventional mode with new trend setting films. One such film was Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ that presented an enthusiastic and cool tale about friends who are ready do and die for each other. With different presentation and treatment the film stood out. But why are we saying this? Because Ajai Sinha’s ‘Stop!’ also follows the same route telling individual stories about four friends. But the end result is far from that entertaining film!
The only characters that stand out among the friends here are Tejaswini Kolhapure and Rocky Bhatia. The rest of the sub plots look like fillers with no element of entertainment. The story is about four friends - Pooja (Gauri Karnik), Tina (Tejaswini Kolhapure), Sonia (Ishita Arun) and Om (Rocky Bhatia) who live together in an apartment in Dubai. Their life takes a turn when Om’s ex-flame Shama (Dia Mirza) who is now married to someone else visits the city for a job. Shama’s marital life in on rocks and so fire again ignites in the heart of Om for her.
Tina also gets into problem after her drunkard father Anand (Om Puri) comes back to her life again. Pooja is also stuck in a situation, owing to her boss (Harsh Chhaya) who makes an indecent proposal if she wants a show of her own as a Radio Jockey. Rohit (Kiran Janjani) who works with Om is a playboy and starts flirting with Sonia after meeting her, turning a deaf ear to Om’s warnings. Here Sonia loves Rohit until she sees his true colour at a party. Rifts and clashes take place in the life of the friends. Dia's husband returns back and the story ends.
The film neither belongs to the genre of an entertainer nor emotional tale of the characters. The poor treatment to the story, irritating comedy, slow pace and lack luster narration doesn’t lead it anywhere. The sub-plots lack the spark to excite the viewers. Director Ajai Sinha appears as a loser with the film and the shoddy script. Vishal-Shekhar's music is efficient. Cinematography is striking.
Tejaswini Kolhapure performance is admirable. Rocky Bhatia and Kiran Janjani have also done a good job. Both Ishita Arun and Gauri Karnik don’t get much scope of performance. Dia Mirza in her small role impresses. Harsh Chhaya and Ali Asgar irritate. Om Puri and Himani Shivpuri are okay.
The film doesn’t boast of a big star cast and neither a good story. It won’t come as a surprise if it fails to make any impact at the box office.
