Movie Review : Shankar scores, Vikram vibrates, Audience awestruck

Producer: V Ravichandran
Director: Shankar
Cast: Vikram, Sadha, Prakash Raj, Nedumudi venu
Music: Harris Jeyaraj

The final result is out after the marathon 15 months of preparation and evaluation done by the audience worldwide. Massive hit, unprecedented opening, colossal collections, biggest hit in the history of Tamil cinema. These are the words that are being heard on the second day of its release.

Oscar films produce the film with the direction by Shankar. The film has Vikram, Sada, Prakash Raj, Nedumudi Venu, Nazar and others. The music is by Harris Jayaraj.

Shankar always thinks that films are and should be a packaged fantasy with a strong social message, which lives on. The film has a racy narration coupled with unbelievable technical special effects, colors galore, sweet music and to top it all, the mind-boggling performance of Vikram.

The story of ‘Anniyan’ is about a Brahmin Iyengar, Ramanujam alias Ambi (Vikram) who works as a lawyer. He sticks to ethics and principles but always fails to win the cases. He cannot sit quietly when injustice is meted out anywhere. He tries to stop people spitting on the road, eve teasing, people who disobey the traffic rules, substandard meals in trains and the goons who demands money from shop keepers. He realizes that the people are not easy to change. He also fails to get enough attention from Nandini (sada) his neighbor with whom he is in love. His father, Parthasarathy (Nedumudi Venu) often tells him he cannot change the system. He gets the same opinion from his friend Chary (Vivek). Ambi feels that he is going nowhere and gets frustrated until he sees a web site of garudapuranam.  He gets some sort of enlightenment on reading this.

Ambi experiences a sudden transformation in him after he reads garudapuranam. Ambi becomes Anniyan and sets out on the big job of taking the baddies to task. He pronounces judgment to all those who cheat, kill, robs and for every other crime. Ambi develops Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) and in split seconds, he changes from Ambi to Anniyan and from Anniyan to Remo, a sexy ravishing model who has young girls going gaga for him including Nandini. A flash back scene explains this sudden change in Ambi.

The spate of murders creates tension in the city and a strict cop, Prabhakar (Prakash Raj) is appointed to investigate the mystery behind the murders happening in the city. What happens to Ambi, Remo and Anniyan in the climax forms the rest of the story.

Vikram as Ambi is credible and as Remo, he is adorable and as Anniyan, he is trust worthy. The hallmark of the entire film is the last twenty-five minutes, especially the climax scene of Vikram and Prakash Raj. The scene will always remain in the memory of the viewers.

The song sequences are a definite plus to the film. The viewers are treated with some visual treat of exotic locales of Europe. Sabu Cyril has recreated the Thyagaraja Aradhana ably.

It is a collective effort from all the people involved in the film, but ultimately it is Vikram who plays the sheet anchor and walks away with all the credit.

Inference - You cannot afford to miss this one.
