Taj Mahal - An Eternal Love Story, a whopping 50 crores budget film, enlivening the love saga of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal by producer-writer-director Akbar Khan, is a grand affair. With the lead cast of Zulfi Sayed, Kabir Bedi, Manisha Koirala, Kim Sharma, Pooja Batra and Arbaaz Khan essaying the eternal characters, it would unfold the glorious golden Mughal with the ethereal romance that has set an example to the whole world. Mashreq Communications presents the film that is to hit the screens soon.

A film of such high note deserves music that does equal justice to the screenplay. Akbar Khan has not taken a chance in this regard and has accredited the renowned music director Naushad with the songs. Decorating the music of the legend are Naqsh Lyallpuri and Syed Gulrez with their words. The album is graced with eight timeless tracks.

Hariharan mesmerizes with the ghazal ‘Apni Zulfein’. The composition and the tune with the enigmatic voice of Hariharan transform you into a different world. Though Tansen is no more among us, yet Naushad doesn’t give the hint of it.

Hariharan envelops another song with his voice along with Preeti Uttam for ‘Ajnabi Thehro Zara’. This romantic duet embarks quality music again. Inflicted with traditional melody, it is a ballad of a different class. Thoroughly loaded with classical music, the tune captures your mind and soul for an eternal bliss.

For this magnanimous romantic masterpiece, another love duet follows as ‘Mumtaz Tujhe Dekha’. Hariharan and Preeti Uttam again wield the mike for another eminent and excellent track. The richness of the lyrics and composition resembles the era the film has been set in. Though the elite music is specifically manifested for the classes, yet the tranquility can be explored by all music souls.

The theme track ‘Tareef E’ Meena Bazaar’ is a musical piece.

The heavy words and music takes a lighter tone as a qawalli ‘Ishq Ki Dastaan’ by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Preeti Uttam unfolds. The singers do a great crooning to the tune and justify the track.

The next track though falls into an ordinary category. This track is ‘Dilruba Dilruba’ by Hariharan and Preeti Uttam. The touch of excellence in the music so far takes a downward swing in this track.

But nonetheless Ajoy Chakraborthy’s ‘Yeh Kaun Mujhe’ revives the tone of music again. It’s a melancholic track with the base of ragas and classical influence. It’s a song worth hearing, though it may cater to a specific genre of listeners only.

The soulful explicit music flowing so far comes to a close with ‘Taj Mahal’ a fusion track with the influence of ‘Mumtaz Tujhe Dekha’ and ‘Dilruba Dilruba’.

The music is an honest attempt in bringing down the essence of the era through the tunes and voices. It has class, versatility, profundity and richness that depict the historic period. Though the music has limitation for going well with the musical elites yet it is not beyond the far and reach of an ordinary man’s musical sense. With such kind of music, we once again find ourselves put in the lap of quality music.
