Director: M.A.Venu Cast: Siddharth, Meenakshi, Jagathy, Nedumudi Venu
Produced under the banner of Vedyuth Films and brought to the theatres by Varnachitra, the MA Venu-directed Kaakkakarumban fails to make much of an impression though it was expected to mark a twist in the acting career of Siddharth, who had arlier made his debut as an actor with Nammal.
Kaakkakarumban, with story and script by the director himself, tells the story of Rameshan, who dislikes and is disliked by his stepfather Velayudhan (Jagathy Sreekumar) and who runs errands for people in the village and thus earns money for himself. This illiterate and innocent youth has, as his friend Shankaran (Harisri Ashokan), who is a flirt by nature. Rameshan feels, for the first time, the warm emotions of love when he meets Meenakshi, who comes to the village to stay with her grandfather (Nedumudi Venu) and there is a change in the world of Rameshan. Anyhow things get complicated when the rich Isaac (Riyaz Khan) makes his entry into the village and gets too intimate with Meenakshi.
Siddharth is well cast as Rameshan and his appearance does suit the role, but somehow he seems to lack screen presence and fails to make much of an impact. Meenakshi, who was earlier seen in Vellinakshatram, is just okay while Riyaz Khan is his usual self as Isaac. Jagathy, Nedumudi, Harisri Ashokan, Kochu Preman and Ponnamma Babu lend able support performing in their usual respective styles. Saikumar as Meenakshi’s father Madhavan gives a good performance. Venugopal, who cranks the camera for the film, has managed to make each frame beautiful and is assisted ably by art-director Premachandran. Of the songs penned by Gireesh Puthencherry and tuned by M Jayachandran, ‘Chembakame ...’ and ‘Kuttaalam kuruvi ...’ are hummable and stand out. Anyhow, in total, Kakkakarumban seems to be conveying nothing and fails to make an impact.
