Music: Various Singers: Bhimsen Joshi, Biddu, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Shaan, Subha Mudgal, Sum, Sumangali, Usha Uthup, Ustad Sultan Khan, Zia Mohyeddin, Zia Mohyeddin, Zila Khan, Zoheb Hassan
On the 99.9 FM soundtrack, most of the 17 songs have been culled from the Virgin Records catalogue, whereas some are from EMI Pakistan.
The only new number is Usha Uthup’s Sau Feesadi. Besides lacking the freshness of her earlier songs, it is marred by too many technology-created effects.
There are many fabulous numbers, of course. Sultan Khan opens with Kate Nahin Raat, used on Salim-Sulaiman’s album Bhoomi, and Zila Khan is marvellous on the traditional folk number Kesariya.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi’s Bhairavi bhajan Jo Bhaje Hari Ko Sada is a treat. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sings in his trademark style on Sanoon Ek Pal.
Shaan’s Tanha Dil is the only chartbuster here. Zoheb Hassan’s Muskuraaye Jaa has happy lines like “Teri zindagi mein yoon toh kaee dard aayenge, arrey muskuraaye jaa.” Shubha Mudgal appears on Intezaar, Chori Chori and Is Pal – only the first one is impressive.
Biddu’s instrumental Nirvana and Sum’s percussion pieces Movement and Raindance provide variety, but the recitation of Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poetry by Zia Mohyeddin is out of place, despite its depth. Another drawback is the length — three or four songs less, and it would have been perfect.
