Audio Review : Dobara (2004)

Music: Anu Malik
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singers: Alisha Chinoy, Alka Yagnik, Anu Malik, Hariharan, Jasbir Jassi

In Dobara, Anu Malik sticks to simple melodies. Though some parts are reminiscent of older numbers, the overall sound is refreshing, with a fair amount of variety.

While Javed Akhtar’s lyrics are effective on some songs, they are plain on others.

Alka Yagnik chips in with three songs. Mujhse Kyon starts off with a whistled portion, after which she asks “Mujhse kyon roothe ho?” The song has a ’70s feel, which is appealing.

Tum Abhi comes in two versions, rendered soulfully by Hariharan and Alka. Despite a resemblance to the Abhilasha song Wadiyan Mera Daman, it impresses with the lyrics: “Tum abhi the yahin, tum abhi the yahan, kho gaye ek pal mein na jaane kahan.” The third Alka song, Goonja Hua, is relatively bland.

Alisha Chinai and Anu team up on Humnasheen. The song may work at clubs, but lyrics like “Life is once” are vague. One part also reminds you of Mary Hopkin’s Those Were The Days. The haunting instrumental Dobara Theme and the Punjabi ballad Pyar Mere (composed, written and sung by Jasbir Jassi) complete this likeable album.
