PC Shriram was the matographer of films like ‘Meera’ and ‘Kurudhipunal’. ‘Vaanam Vasappadum’ is his directorial venture. For the first time, multidimensional cameras were used for this.
Poonkodhai is the daughter of multimillionaire businessman Vijayakumar. She is very childish .she falls in love with Advocate Karthik, son of Revathy-Nasser. Vijayakumar is falsely accused of cash embezzlement and is sent to the prison. Poonkodhai has no one to look after her now.
Karthik takes her home and gets married to her with his parents’ consent. On their way home after their wedding, their car breaks down and they decide to take the bus. Somehow they get separated in the crowds and Poonkodhai is raped by two men. The rest of the story is about her fight for justice in spite of the cheap talks by advocates and by the society.
Karthik’s romance with Poonkodhai is very enjoyable. The director has managed to make the audience feel the pain during the rape scene. We need to appreciate his portrayal of two young people who have taken their battle against the society and society’s ridicule towards them. The film moves at a slow pace. It feels as if ma too has caught up with murdering Tamil like they do on TV shows these days.
Newcomer Poongothai Chandranathan has done the lead role. She very well shows the transformation from a rich man’s pampered daughter to a woman who fights for justice. It touches our minds when she pulls the emergency chain and brings the train to a halt and demands, “I haven’t done anything wrong. Why should I leave the city?”
Newcomer Karthik Kumar, who had played Karthik, has done reasonably well. Revathy and Nasser have done their roles well too. Sometimes it is nice to watch Nasser speak from the pit of his throat. Sometimes, it annoys. Thalaivasal’ Vijay as the ruthless advocate, Kovai Sarala as the prostitute, YMC Haniffa in the mean role and those lads as degraded young boys have all done their roles very well.
Lara’s dialogues suit Sujatha’s story. Mahesh’s music has worked well for ‘Kangal theendi’ and ‘Ullam uyirae’. Good results have come from the digital sounds. Background score is good too.
