Movie Review : Kuthu (2004)

Producer: Amutha Durairaj, K C N Chandrasekar
Director: A Venkatesh
Cast: Silmabarasan, Ramya, Vijayakumar, Vivek, Kalabhavan Mani

Simbu is still fascinated with his annoyingly rhyming dialogues like “Naan kaakarthilae Shivan, thookardhilae Yaman…”. But it look as if we are getting used to it. This is the second time that Simbu and A Venkatesh are reuniting. Their first film was ‘Dum’.

Simbu and Ramya are college mates. Ramya’s father is Kalabhavan Mani, who is a notorious gangster. Simbu and Ramya perform a dance together. Kalabhavan Mani’s henchmen happen to see the dance and warn Simbu not to touch her and dance. But, Simbu always tries to defy orders and declares right there that Ramya is going to be his girlfriend and makes her fall in love with him. This results in clashes with her father. The rest of the story is about how he resolves the conflicts.

The film is almost the remake of ‘Dum’. The ‘Nipuna…nipuna’ song reminds you of ‘Chanakya’. Ramya has a beautiful face like Jayapradha’s and a beautiful body to go with it. She impresses in the song.

Kalabhavan Mani is a big plus for the film. He switches his emotions from villainy to comedy with his mimicry and does a very impressive work as a villain. Just when Karunaas was going to be sent home on early retirement, he makes a strong comeback with this film. He should be careful atleast now. Vijayakumar draws applause when he asks if there’s anything wrong if fathers oppose love relationships. The theatre enjoys at the attempts of making his parents stay in the villain’s house itself.

Deva’s son Shrikanth has composed music for the film. He has followed his father’s style and has made some hit songs. He should pay attention to the background score. Venkatesh’s cinematography and Super Subburayan’s stunts are okay.

Director VEnkatesh has whipped up a formula for commercial success. ‘Kuthu’ sticks to it.
Not bad.

Wow!

Kalabhavan Mani, Ramya

Oops!

Simbu’s mannerisms resemble those of ‘Dum’.
