Movie Review : Vamanapuram Bus Route (2004)

Director: Sonu Sisupal
Cast: Mohanlal, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy

It is a rough ride for the viewers and as well as for the hero of the film Mohanlal who is experiencing a bad patch in his career. Vamanapuram Bus Route adds to the list of failures for the actor who has enthrilled the audiences with his boy next door image.  Something has to be done by Mohanlal to recreate the magic he once used to.

The story is narrated in the backdrop a small village called Vamanapuram with no public transport connection to the outside world.  Panchayat president Jagathy Sreekumar is keen to bring a private bus to the untarred roads of this small village but his enemies are not pleased with his efforts.  Jagathy's interest in bringing the bus service is not devoid of any selfish motive.  His intention is to make a few lakhs in getting the roads tarred by the PWD in the guise of getting the bus service. But his efforts are nulled by his nosy enemies.  Here comes 'Lever' Johnny (Mohanlal), a tough bus conductor who can get things done.  The rest of the story is how Mohanlal gets the job done for Jagathy and in the process winning the only daughter Meenakshi (Lakshmi Gopalasway).

Mohanlal's character is introduced as a die-hard fan of MGR who not only dresses like the MGR but also sings and fights like the great actor! Other than this the film offers nothing new.  The film suffers from the dull scripts of Sudhish and John and also the lack of interest shown by Mohanlal.  The music is unimpressive and the camera work of Sanjeev Shankar is nothing to boast off.  The bottom line is that the Vamanapuram Bus route is full of pits and holes!
