‘Meenaxi- A Tale of Two Cities’ is a movie written, directed and produced by famous painter M F Husain. He uses the cinematic frames as canvas and draws colorful pictures. A.R. Rehman scores music for this periodic drama. Tabu plays the female lead.
The album ‘Meenaxi’ starts with the song ‘Yeh Rishta’. This is one of the best compositions of this album. Rahat Indori comes out with a well-written lyric. The sound of running water in the background adds to the soothing effect of the song. Debutant Reema Bharadwaj sings this splendid composition with ease.
‘Chinnamma Chilakkamma’ is south Indian in flavor. This is composed in typical Rehman style. Once again the master composer joins hands with his hit singer Sukhwinder Singh. The result - another ‘Chayya Chayya’. However ‘Chikkamma Chikkamma’ lacks the energy that ‘ Chayya Chayya’ had. In all other fields it matches with the other Rehman – Sukhwinder hit. ‘Chayya Chayya’ is remembered for its beautiful picturisation. Here also the picturisation is perfect. Owais Hussain, son of M.F Hussain is the man behind it.
‘Do Kadam Aur Sahi’is a remarkable composition! This reflects the feelings of the lovers who are close to their destiny. They are just two feet away! A.R.Rehman’s music emulates the mood of the lovers. Sonu Nigam’s voice unfailingly captures the passion and excitement of the lovers. Rahat Indori’s lyrics are straight from his heart. This is one of the remarkable musical compositions of the decade.
‘Cyclist's Rhythm’ is a unique attempt by A.R.Rehman. This is an instrumental song with cycle bell taking the center stage in this composition. Shivamani, one of the fastest percussionist and Navin Kumar, the flautist joins the performance. This wonderful composition is a must hear.
‘Dhuan Dhuan’ is western in flavor. Asha Bhonsle’s timeless voice magnifies the effect of this seductive track. Shivamani’s percussion and James Asher’s rendition adds to the mood of the song.
Next song ‘Rang Hai’ talks about the significance of colors in our life. This is actually the philosophy of its director – producer M.F.Hussain. Rahat Indori ingeniously projects this vision in words and Alka Yagnik comes out with a soulful rendition.
‘Potters Village’ an instrumental portraying the potter’s village. Hossam Ramzy and John Themis breathe life to this creation.
With ‘Noor-un-ala-noor’ MF.Hussain turns lyricist. He has written this qawali number. Murtuza Khan and Qadir Khan lend voice to this creative effort of M.F.Hussain. This song like all qawali’s praise the lord almighty and thank him for providing us with such a beautiful world.
A.R.Rehman ably satisfies the impulsive M.F.Hussain with his compositions. The music of ‘Meenaxi’ is better than that of M.F Hussain’s first venture ‘Gajagamini’. This music caters to the tastes of both musical experts and common man. In total this is a wonderful effort by A.R.Rehman and he needs a round of applause for his fine work.
