Audio Review : Julie (2004)

Producer: N R Pachisia
Director: Deepak Shivdasani
Music: Himesh Reshammiya
Lyrics: Sameer
Singers: Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal, Jayesh Gandi, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan

In the name of bold movies comes another flick that tries to cash in on this current trend. Deepak Shivdasani, who has been a part of Bollywood for a long time now directs 'Julie', a movie about a prostitute played by Neha Dhupia. Whereas in Qayamat, Neha had exactly four songs and five scenes to her credit, in 'Julie' she gets an opportunity to carry an entire movie on her shoulders with support from Priyanshu Chatterjee, who is struggling to find a foothold in the industry in spite of some good performances in the movies he has acted in. Produced by N. R. Pachisia, 'Julie' has been a quickie in it's making and comes in the wake of Murder, Hawas and Girlfriend. Himesh Reshammiya, from whom you expect some good Indian melodies composes, while regular Sameer writes.

'Hum Tumse Dil' sounds predictable to the core when heard first but gradually starts registering itself after being played a few times. A romantic love song by Udit Narayan and Anuradha Paudwal, is has very average lyrics but manages to hold on mainly due to Himesh Reshammiya's music. Not a song of chartbuster variety, it is one of those songs that can be heard at leisure and forgotten after the movie's run is through. People behind this number may have thought of it to be one blockbuster and that's the reason why it also appears as an instrumental and in two versions - a regular and a sad one. Udit Narayan is at the helm of affairs again in both the parts.

'Dhadkan Ho Gayee' is melodious and is a step ahead of 'Hum Tumse Dil' in terms of being hummable. Though the number is not exceptional, it is to the credit of Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik that they manage to make this average song sound pleasing. The number follows the footsteps of conventional Hindi movie love songs. An interesting aspect of the song is that at certain points, it does have clear shades of 'Teri Yaad Har Kadam Subah Shaam' from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's 'Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya' !! Sameer's lyrics are as predictable as always and the best part is that they still work !! 'Bheegi Bheegi' is an addition to the list of previous two average songs and doesn't really excite much. Alka Yagnik too doesn't seem to be enjoying while singing this one while Himesh seems to have done a hurried job while composing this one. An OK song where the girl is wooing her love, you may not really be interested to know what happened thereafter !

After 'Kambakth Ishq, 'Ishq Kameena' and 'Ishq Khudaai' comes 'Ishq Tezaab' !! Omigawd ! That's scary. The number is anything but hot acid ! Sunidhi Chauhan was never this cold while this composition by Reshammiya could well be one of the most listless numbers he would have ever composed. Jayesh Gandhi in the background does try to moan and groan to charge up this song but the supporting musical arrangements are so bland that the attempt fails completely.

Title song 'Julie' comes quite late in the day and tries to be quite 'sugar'n'sweet. Though Sonu Nigam tries his best and Jayesh Gandhi does a voiceover at places, the song is at best average again. The number tries to plug in as many elements as possible to make it a heart-touching number but to no avail. Towards the end comes a love duet 'Ae Dil Ye Bata' by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik, which is again very routine and has nothing great to offer. Sameer doesn't even attempt to write anything new and the composer too manages to do just a passable job.

 Very passable !!
