Movie Review : Chand Bujh Gaya (2004)

Producer: Faaiz Anwar
Director: Sharique Minhaj
Cast: Faizal Khan, Shama Sikander, Aliza, Faraaz Khan
Music: Kanak Raj, Ali Gani
Lyrics: Faaiz Anwer

Finally ‘Chand Bujh Gaya’ is released. The Bombay High court has given a verdict in favor of the producer. All the controversies surrounding the film made the audience curios. But at last when they watched the movie they could not make out why this hulla –bulla is about.

This movie is about Rahul (Faisal Khan) and the Muslim girl he loves Savi ( Shama Sikdar). Rahul’s friend Meghna (Aliza) helps them in their union. But before they start to enjoy their life together the Gujarat riot happens. They were torn apart by the violence.

‘Chand Bujh Gaya’ has nothing to boast about. The story is very common and the treatment is also very boring. Barring the scenes of the train burning and the Hindu- Muslim strife there is nothing in it to see. If you take out these scenes the movie is lost.

Acting is pathetic. Shama Sikadar looks good in this movie. But her acting is very poor. Faisal Khan and Alisha should look out for better career options that suit them. From this movie it is visible that acting is not their cup of tea.

Music by Kanak Raj and Ali Gani is very poor. The story lacks energy, freshness, depth….etc. Make up is awful. Producer should have a word with the costume designer. Look how the hero (!) looks in that dress! Poor Guy!

The movie is being promoted as a movie on Gujarat Riot. But there is no in-depth description of the subject. It shows a character who looks like the chief minister of Gujarat.  The creators of ‘Chand Bujh Gaya’ make use of these kinds of cheap gimmicks to assure the success of the film.  But controversies cannot sustain the audience interest. I doubt even the people of Gujarat will enjoy the movie.

All together this movie is a bad effort. The only grace point is that it sends out a message that the Gujarat riot is not actually a Hindu- Muslim riot but one created by the politicians for their gain.
