Movie Review : Monalisa (2004)

Producer: Dushyanth, Santhoshkumar
Director: Indrajit Lankesh
Cast: Dhyan, Sada, Umashri, Ramakrishna, Bhavya

This one is for the teenagers. Director Indrajith Lankesh has coalesced romance, comedy and sentiments in his third movie and has done a neat job, particularly in the second half.

A young man Dhyan (Dhyan), falls in love with Monalisa (Sada), a doctor, after rejecting several proposals. Her parents are settled in the US. Dhyan has the first shock of his life when Monalisa leaves for the US as her father develops health problems. Later, he hears from Monalisa's father
that she died in an accident. Dhyan is devasted. But his parents arrange Dhyan's marriage with Spandana (Sada). Dhyan agrees reluctantly.

There is another shock in store for him. Spandana looks exactly like Monalisa. On the first night, Dhyan tells Spandana has association with Monalisa and that it will take some time for him to erase her memories. Spandana finds life miserable as Dhyan is cold with her. But they gradually settle in conjugal bliss and Spandana becomes pregnant.

The story takes a shocking turn when on an outing with Spandana, Dhyan sees Monalisa in a hospital. He gets to know that her father had concoted a tale and in reality Monalisa was cloistered in a room in the US.

Exasperated, she escapes and comes to India. What does Dhyan do? Does he leave Spandana and go back to Monalisa? Or does he stay with Spandana?

Dhyan and Sada (in a double role) have done an excellent job. The comedy scenes by Sharan and Ramya are just about okay, music by Vallisha Sandeep is foot-tapping. Krishnakumar has handled the camera deftly. The dialouges by B.A. Madhu is one the highlights of the movie.
