‘Daman’ which means dominance is a film on the violence done against women globally, which has brought shame and curse on every part of the society. The film shows that especially in India women has been subjected to domestic violence and has been forced to bear through it silently. The film is the story of Durga (Raveena Tandon) who is being considered weak by her husband and has been subjected to constant physical and mental torture by her husband, Sanjay Saikia (Sayaji Shinde) who is a tea plantation owner in Assam. But things go out of her tolerance when he rapes her one night. Her only savior in her ghastly life is Sunil Saikia (Sanjay Suri) her brother-in-law who guides her emotionally. Durga gives birth to a daughter Deepa (Raima Sen), but Sanjay says that he’ll accept the child only if it’s a boy. Durga endure all the pain and the humiliation for her daughter. It Sunil's support that helps her survive. When Deepa is just thirteen years old Sanjay insists that she marry. When her protests don’t help Durga decides to run away from home. Sanjay accuses Sunil of having an illicit relationship with Durga and being the father of Deepa and in a drunken state murders him. Deepa is bequeathed all the property and Sanjay finds her and tries to kill her. Durga emerges with the strength of Goddess Durga and vows not to give her daughter the same fate she has suffered.
