Audio Review : Daman - Flavored with folk style music

Producer: Dept. of Family Welfare, Govt. of India

Cast: Raveena Tandon, Sayaji Shinde, Sanjay Suri, Shaan
Music: Bhupen Hazarika
Singers:  Dominique, Shaan,  Jaspinder Narula, Bhupen Hazarika, Shaan, Hema Sardesai, Alka Yagnik

After 'Gajagamini' Dr. Bhupen Hazarika arrives with his next musical offering.  His former works have been widely acclaimed. But he didn’t enjoy as much recognition with his last composition. However he can’t be blamed anyway as the film was based on a restricted theme much of the composer's creativity. For Dr. Bhupen Hazarika is again at his form to create at his freewheel. The music is imaginatively and creatively sound. 'Daman' has a good score but not anything near 'Rudaali'.

'Daman' is a serious film tackling the issue of marital rape. And t he songs have been build in sync with the film. One can feel the emotion reflected with the theme changing from happy to sad.

Jaspinder Narula begins the proceedings and sounds very different in the 'Bhagwati song’. The songs sound fresh as she renders something very different from her common style of singing. From the fast paced number she changes gear with this slow and soothing devotional song. She does a good job and the outcome of the song is nice.

Next comes a folksy melodic number 'Sun sun goria'. It is a lovely marriage song sung by Alka Yagnik. This song is used for the promo of the film and going by the quality of the track it looks like the best choice.

In the same tone and tune is the next number 'Sar sar hawa'. The feel of the song is folksy but lapped with modern and unique chorus. Hema Sardesai justifies the song with her beautiful rendition. The song repeats itself once again in the album.

Another beautiful songs come up next. 'Gum sum' in Kavita Krishnamurthy's voice sounds mesmerizing. The song was originally composed and sung by Dr. Hazarika in Assamese and has been translated into Hindi here. She deserves every credit for making the song worthwhile. The song repeats again in the male voice with Dr. Hazarika coming behind the mike. His deep sonorous voice adds another dimension to this haunting song.

'Gum sum', sounds very haunting in Kavita Krishnamurthy's voice. Kavita is in a terrific form in the song, as she was earlier in 'Mera hansa gaya videsh' in 'Gajagamini'.

A beautiful and energetic number is 'Bahar hi bahar'. Trumpets and guitars dominate the orchestra. Dominique and Shaan deliver a good rendition.

'Hu hu paagal hawa' is another melodious song by Ishaan and Kavita. The song has the potentia to become popular.
The album is flavored with Assamese music and anybody who have an ear for folk based or quality music should go for it.
