Movie Review : Deewanapan (2001)

Producer: Vashu Bhagnani
Director: Ashu Trikha
Cast: Om Puri, Vinod Khanna, Diya Mirza, Arjun Rampal
Music: Adesh Shrivastava

A one movie old model-turned-actor is expected to shoulder the responsibility of raising an oft- repeated story. Helping him in his task is a heroine who is also, just a movie old, and a veteran actor who is making a comeback of a sort as a character artiste. So every thing from the word go gets going wrong for the movie and you realize that the title of the movie is the only factor that truly goes with the mood of the movie.

Thus the oft-repeated plot begin with a young man Suraj (Arjun Rampal) who lives in the beautiful town of Dalhousie. A pretty damsel Kiran (Diya Mirza) comes on a visit and decides to explore the place. Her exploration comes to an abrupt end when she sights Suraj and its love at first sight. Now before the lovesome two-some can exchange love vows, the holiday comes to an end and the two part.

The movie could have ended here, but the writer who was very much obsessed with one of those classic Shammi Kapoor kinda movie thus arranges Suraj's dad (Om Puri) transfer to the girl's town. So finally, our eager hero gets a chance to win his sweetheart. But it would not be a love-story without an obstacle. So we have Kiran's dad, Chaudhary Randhir Singh (Vinod Khana) playing the villain. When Kiran's daddy dearest comes to know of the relationship, all terror breaks lose. Now this is one old man in the town who does not like Suraj (maybe because he does not look as good as he does even at this age). More so he does not like his pretty little daughter running around trees with the guy, so he decides to give Suraj 30 days to leave town.

But our hero, Suraj is an adamant fellow and Kiran's love wont go waste. To empasis the point, our hero daringly tells Randhir Singh that Kiran is his Dewaanapan…(thank god he does not stammer kiiiiiran and breath his last) In the end, love triumphs over all. Performance wise, through the movie you have Arjun Rampal walking on the ramp. The guy who had been raised to starry heights after his debut film fails to prove his abilities at the job. Another point noted was that like Salman Rampal has used every excuse possible to take off his shirt. Was that intentional to make it look like the hot pair of Salman and Aishwarya was on screen? What with the close resemblance of Diya to Aishwarya.

As about Diya Mirza, the lesser said about her role the better. If she was taken in the film with the sole purpose of dancing around trees, then she has done a pretty good job.

Veterans Om Puri and Vinod Khana have been completely wasted in half-baked roles. Neither of them manage to salvage the film.

Musically the film has nothing to sing home about. Cinematography is strictly okay. Some action scenes have been well coordinated. Production values are moderate.

Deewaanapan is definitely avoidable, especially when there are better movies playing in the other cinema halls and your idiot box.
