After a gap of two years Ismail Darbar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali come together once again to recreate the magic of their last musical success ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. In this endeavor debutant lyricist Nusrat Badr amply supports them. Set in a lushy and colorful background this movie will definitely be a treat for our eyes and the music for the ears.

For a man who composes music from heart, creating the right ambience for this tragic love tale is not a big issue. Ismail Darbar comes up with a music that matches with the mood of the lead cast and the situation he is in. As this is a screen adaptation of great Bengali novelist Saratchandra’s novel, music has a certain Bengali flavor.

A new entrant into Bollywood playback-singing scene, Shreya Ghosal, sings ‘Silsila Yeh Chahat Ka’.  Ismail Darbar’s music cannot be termed as an easily hummble one, but this new kid in the block does it effectively. She sings the high –pitched portion with great ease and shows excellent control over her vocals, never faltering in her rendition.

The next track ‘Maar Daala’ is a high voltage mujra number in the voice of Kavita Krishnamurthy and KK. Lavish setting, high-spirited rendition and above all the presence of beautiful Madhuri Dixit makes it a sure hit among the moviegoers.

Udit Narayan shows his classical prowess with the song ‘Bairi Piya’. Talented Shreya supports him well in this musical endeavor. With the intermittent use of the word ‘Ish’ Ismail Darbar gives this song a unique feel.

Take this song ‘Kahe Chede Mohe’. It is a classical track rendered by two unique singers, Madhuri Dixit and Pandit Birju Maharaj. Kavita Krishnamurthy too chips in with her silky voice. This song may not have a mass appeal. But it is a treat for the lovers of classical music.

On the other hand ‘Hamesha Tumko Chaha’ appeals to all sections of the crowd. It is the best song of the album. This one is filmed during Paro’s (Aishwarya) marriage. So it depicts the inner turmoil and pain of the leading lady. Nusrat Badr’s lyrics are so touchy that it pulls your heartstrings tight. Udit and Kavita put in their heart to this track and come out with an emotional piece.

Now let us go to a ‘masti’ track ‘Chalak Chalak’. This one is set in a ‘Kotha’ where Jackie and Shahrukh sing and dance in an inebriated state. Udit and Vinod lend their voice to this ‘Ched Chad wali’ track.

In this female dominated album we are made to wait long for a male solo. And as Udit starts crooning ‘Chand Jaisi Ladki’ we realize that this is worth waiting for. On the whole this is a sweet and simple romantic track well rendered by the veteran singer.

‘Morey Piya’ is again a well-rendered song. Jaspinder Narula and Shreya Ghosal effortlessly flow through the track. Good to hear Jaspinder in a slow moving semi classical song.

In the end there is a nice traditional dance track where two of the most beautiful women battle out in the middle. Kavita, Shreya and KK croon this folksy track ‘Dola Re Dola’. This is one of the most lively and colorful tracks in this collection.

As the album concludes it is the female voice that stays with you. The songs just grow on you. Overall, ‘Devdas’ offer you a nice musical feast.
