With this romantic movie, director Anant Mahadevan is making an attempt to familiarize today’s young generation with the divine musical compositions of Burmanda. Keeping that in mind he has picked up 14 of the Burmanda songs and rearranged them to suit his purpose. The man he chose for this extraordinary work is none other than Babloo Chakravarty, an assistant to the legendary music director in many of his musical creations.
The movie tells the story of four love pairs for whom music is everything. The actors who enact these roles include Madhavan, Jimmy Shergill, Sanjay Suri, Rakesh Bopat, Hrishita Bhatt, Sonali Kulkarni and Riya Sen.
Abhijeet and Sunidhi Chauhan start the proceeding with the song ‘O Haseena Zulfonwali’. Both these singers make legendary Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle proud. With the introduction of modern musical instruments this track gets zippier and peppier. Babloo Chakravarty manages to turn it to a trendy modern track without damaging its original beauty. Wait to watch the young yuppie generation dance to the tunes of this evergreen classic.
The popular Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar hit ‘Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai’ do have takers even today. This timeless classic is rendered by three of the well-known singers of this decade, Hariharan, Babul Supriyo and Abhijeet. And there is no point for guessing the outcome of their endeavor.
Kumar Shanu whose voice resembles the immortal Kishore Kumar croons this nice melodious number ‘Yadon Ki Baraat’. Kumar Shanu’s effort to mimic Kishore da ruins this otherwise excellent track.
Shaan too gets a piece of the cake with the song ‘Mere Samnewali Khidki Mein’. And undoubtedly this gifted singer makes the most out of this rare chance. Babloo Chakravarty gives a jazzy touch to this timeless Kishorda classic.
Another of the famous Kishore Kumar song ‘Barsaat Bhi Aakar Chali Gayi’ reverberates through the voice of Abhijeet. Babloo Chakravarty adds more vibrancy and richness to this track with his musical re-arrangement.
Babul Supriyo and Preeta Mazumdar give a new touch to this classical romantic track ‘Kehna Hai’. To double the glee there is a male solo version of the same track in the voice of Babul Supriyo. He joins Sadhana Sargam for the rendition of another love song ‘Ab Ke Sawan Mein’. This time the music arranger fails to lift the song up with his re- arrangement.
Hariharan recreates the magic of Kishore Kumar with his passionate rendition of the formers popular numbers like ‘Tum Bin’, ‘Hansini’, ‘Gum Hai Kisi Ke’ and ‘Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi’. Babloo Chakravarty’s efforts need a special mention. He has made a new song out of ‘Gum Hai Kisi Ke’ with a slight change in its musical arrangement. The same holds true of ‘O Hansini’. There is only one word to describe these tracks-marvelous!
Once again Kishore Kumar clone Kumar Shanu comes behind the mike. This time he renders Kishoreda’s famous romantic track ‘Raat Kali’. Even though his attempts at aping the legendary singer backfires, the song holds its ground and comes out beautifully.
After Kumar Shanu, Kavita Krishnamurthy gets a chance to pay her tribute to the legendary music director. She does so with the song ‘Kya Janoon Sajan’. Unfortunately this one does not go well with the mood of the album. But it may fit perfectly in the movie situation.
In the end it is the turn of instrumentals. Babloo comes up with an instrumental version of the songs ‘O Hansini’ and ‘O Haseena Zulfonwali’. It is a nice attempt from the veteran music arranger.
By and large this album is a wonderful collection of great Burmanda’s tracks. Babloo needs a pat on the back for his tremendous efforts. He redoes the music without distorting the original. The pick of the album is ‘O Haseena’ and the four Hariharan tracks. Just give it a try. It is definitely an addition to your music collection.
