Movie Review : Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001)

Producer: Emar F.
Director: Abbas Mastan
Cast: Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Preeti Zinta, Prem Chopra, Amrish Puri, Johny Lever
Music: Anu Malik

The film had gathered more controversy, which to a certain extend may help its innitial run and beyond that if the film works, it is basically on the novelty of its story. The film is a modern day version of an earlier Bollywood potboiler Bewafa Se Wafa. The film portrays the predicament of a married couple (Salman and Rani) that cannot stake claim to their inheritance because they do not have a child. A twist is added to the sugary family drama when a bar-dancer (Preity) agrees to become a surrogate mother.

Preity metamorphosis from a cocky and unabashed sex worker to a sensitive young girl and then to a jealous lover has the panache of a seasoned actress. Here Abbas-Mustan, the directorial duo has adopted an drawn inspiration from the Hollywood flick Pretty Woman, especially the scene in a boutique.

Rani's role does not give her much scope besides weeping. For Salman fans, the film is a must see. He is required to look good and cool and he does exactly that. But this is one film where he does not throw off his shirt. Script-wise the film scores on account of perky Preity and the overwhelming feel-goodness. She has the author backed role and she has justified the character to the core. Cinematically, it is worth a dekko for the acting, visuals and superior technical values.

Coming from director duo Abbas-Mastan, who stormed into Bollywood with Khiladi and followed it with the super hit Baazigar, Chori... lives up to expectations. The duo have also shown a fair flair for family dramas.

Similarly the earlier combination of Salman, Rani and Preity proved to be a moderate hit in Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega. And, Chori... just proves that this is the most bankable trio in the industry as the combination just look excelent on the big screen and the chemistry just proves right. Chori... is likely to hit the jackpot with the coming week and infuse a new lease of life into the industry.
