Movie Review : Chupke Se

Producer: Nirmal Anand, Jayshri Makhija
Director: Shona Urvashi
Cast: Zulfi Syed, Masumi Makhija, Rati Agnihotri, Om Puri, Tinu Anand
Music: Vijay Bharadwaj, Ranjit Barot

After watching ‘Chupke Se’, there’s only one thing I want to scream out. Bollywood filmmakers we know that you’ve run out of ideas and there’s no originality left. But at least try to make a good Hollywood remake film. Here director Shona Urvashi picks the Hollywood flick ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ and even with a ready made script and story she is unable to at all justice to the film. Her efforts is to launch her daughter Masumi Makhija with this, but after watching the film we are not sure how far Masumi is going to go.

Megha (Masumi Makhija) is a young and ambitious girl who aspires to be rich and famous. She with her friend Peeya occasionally goes to the disco without the knowledge of her parents. One fine day she meets Varun (Zulfi Syed) a rich businessman there. Varun mistakes her thinking somebody else and Megha takes advantage of the situation and somehow reaches Almira (Rati Agnihotri). Seeing Megha’s potential Almira decides to make her Miss India. The events take a turn when Don (Om Puri) appears who wants to kill Megha and her father (Dilip Prabhavalkar). The story leads to the climax.

The film has no great moments to hold to and so the fire dies even before the show ends. Music by Vishal Bharadwaj is functional. Cinematography by Madhu Ambat is ok.

Masumi Makhija was a familiar face in television serials before she decided to step towards the big screen. Acting wise there is no complains from her in this film though she needs to appear more eased out and needs a better make up. Zulfi has a good role and he carries it fine. Rati Agnihotri excels with her powerful performance. She carries her role well and doesn’t appear weirdo even when she does high society stuff. Jayanti Kripalani, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Cyrus Broacha and Peeya Rai chaudhary are good. Om Puri in his role of a don pulls up a great shot once again.

With less hype and promotion ‘Chupke Se’ is sure to get a dismal start at the box office and won’t be able to hold on for long.
