Vikramjeet (Dev Anand) is a filmmaker and is making his new film 'Aanewala Kal'. The film has been examined by the members (Rekha, Jackie Shroff, Mamta Kulkarni, Amrish Puri, Smita Jaykar, Nikhil Kapoor) of the Central Board of Film Certification and has been passed with 13 cuts and an 'A' certificate. Vikramjeet persist for an 'U' certificate for the film. But his appeal doesn’t help. He at last decides to screen the film for I. & B. Minister (Shivaji Satam). But things go worse as he adds five more cuts to the film. In desperation Vikramjeet approaches Mumbai High Court to seek justice. Before he screens the film for the censors he organises a public screening of the film and records the comments of the people from all walks of life.
Academy Awards Committee, Margaret (Archana Puransingh) is also one among the viewer and she likes the film so much that she backs it to get nominated in the Academy Awards. To the good luck of Vikramjeet the film gets smuggled to Los Angeles and lo here it bags two Oscars awards for the best foreign language film and best director. But Vikramjeet’s woe is far from over as when the Censor Board learns about it, a case is filed against Vikramjeet for smuggling the film to Hollywood without it being censored. Vikramjeet appears before the judge (Shammi Kapoor) to defend himself. The film ends on the note that India needs to review its censor policy.
