Movie Review : Censor

Producer: Dev Anand
Director: Dev Anand
Cast: Dev Anand, Govinda, Heenee Kaushik, Jackie Shroff, Mamta kulkarni, Rekha, Shammi Kapoor
Music: Jatin-Lalit

Directed by Dev Anand Navketan International Films' ‘Censor’ mocks the censorship in India. It is an innovative story that hasn’t been attempted in Bollywood before. Dev Anand’s choice of subject is commendable. It is a cry on behalf of the producers who have a tough time dealing with the censors. But this in turn restraints the subject as only people from the industry can relate with it.

Vikramjeet (Dev Anand) is a filmmaker and is making his new film 'Aanewala Kal'. The film has been examined by the members (Rekha, Jackie Shroff, Mamta Kulkarni, Amrish Puri, Smita Jaykar, Nikhil Kapoor) of the Central Board of Film Certification and has been passed with 13 cuts and an 'A' certificate. Vikramjeet persist for an 'U' certificate for the film. But his appeal doesn’t help. He at last decides to screen the film for I. & B. Minister (Shivaji Satam). But things go worse as he adds five more cuts to the film. In desperation Vikramjeet approaches Mumbai High Court to seek justice. Before he screens the film for the censors he organises a public screening of the film and records the comments of the people from all walks of life.

Academy Awards Committee, Margaret (Archana Puransingh) is also one among the viewer and she likes the film so much that she backs it to get nominated in the Academy Awards. To the good luck of Vikramjeet the film gets smuggled to Los Angeles and lo here it bags two Oscars awards for the best foreign language film and best director. But Vikramjeet’s woe is far from over as when the Censor Board learns about it, a case is filed against Vikramjeet for smuggling the film to Hollywood without it being censored. Vikramjeet appears before the judge (Shammi Kapoor) to defend himself. The film ends on the note that India needs to review its censor policy.

The narration is not as strong as it ought to be and the first half is a poor show. Sequences lack appeal and the plot appears implausible. Many things have been exaggerated and stretched beyond measure. Also there are clusters of stars in the first half in blink and miss role. Randhir Kapoor, Mukesh Khanna, Mukul Dev, Sharad Kapoor, Pooja Batra and Govinda make their appearances but fail to click. The second half is the best part of the enterprise and the courtroom scenes attracts interest. Some scenes in these portions are well executed. Towards the climax a sharp editing of 20 minutes is called forth. Direction is old-fashioned. Jatin-Lalit's music is poor. Cinematography and dialogues are apt.

The focus of the film rests on writer-director Dev Anand throughout. As he stays on the front always the rest are relegated to the background. Performance wise he does a fine job though he goes overboard at times. Among the very many actors in the film Rekha stands out. Hema Malini doesn’t get much to do. Jackie Shroff, Mamta Kulkarni and Amrish Puri are in negative role. Amongst newcomers Raja is fine.

The film is mediocre and due to its one-dimensional theme will not cater to masses.
