Movie Review : Boom

Producer: Ayesha Shroff
Director: Kaizad Gustad
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Javed Jaffri, Zeenat Aman, Gulshan Grover, Madhu Sapre, Padma Lakshmi, Katrina Kaif
Music: Talvin Singh and Sandeep Chowta

From the promos ‘Boom’ looks chic and stylish. But in reality it is just an overview. Truly the film is all hype with no substance. The propaganda is to garner attention through the three sensuous ladies at the front Padma, Katrina and Madhu Sapre. Add to that Amitabh Bachchan and Hollywood actor Bo Derek who can make you go berserk. But as the film gets going, this star cast doesn’t hold the interest for long.

The highlight of the film is the stylish look. Also the music score is haunting. But that’s only to it. Too much skin show lead to vulgarity and exposure and you detest it after sometime. The lewd character Boom Shankar played by Javed Jaffery adds to more crude tone. It is totally unadvisable to watch the film along with your family.

What more! Superstar Amitabh Bachchan looks weirdo and out of place in the film. He plays the underworld kingpin Bade Mia who delights in reading comics and chasing Hollywood fantasies in his free time. He is shown running after Bo Derek. If you cannot recognize him over the make up, you can spot him as the man in white. Zeenat Aman who makes a comeback to films with this, plays the role of Bade Mia’s secretary, who jigs and dances for her boss at times. It’s sad to see the lady in one such role. Jackie Shroff plays Chhote Mia, who claims fifty-fifty share in all his deals. As an unrighteous gangster he carries off. Javed Jaffery sparks up the screen every time he is there with his mix of comedy and indecency as Boom Shankar.

Padma Lakshmi is paired opposite Bachchan and it is a couple to watch with their uncomfortable chemistry and age difference. Katrina doesn’t do much other than wearing the same expression throughout the film. Madhu Sapre is so-so. The only role given to these ladies are of glamour and sex appeal. There’s more to the fashion world in the film. Watch the cameo of Tarun Tahiliani, Wendell Rodricks and Rohit Bal in insipid performances.

Director Kaizad Gustad has put all his efforts to make a glossy film and you can very well understand that. But what the audience craves is much more than what the director has provided us with. The film lacks substance, do you hear it Mr. Director. ‘Boom’ will only attract those who like to feast on skin shows. Others better keep away from it.
