Suraj Srivastav (Abhishek Bachchan) is an ambitious young man from Banares. He aspires to make it big in Mumbai like his idol, the media tycoon, Naved Ali (Jackie Shroff). While getting a foothold in his city of dreams, Suraj meets Pooja (Rani Mukherjee), a fellow college student and falls in love with her. His career takes off at the same time. Suraj finally meets Naved at a college function. He promises Naved that he will win the scholarship sponsored by him.
But his fate depends on the outcome of a 100-metre race to be held on the annual sports day. Suraj can’t make it to the starting line, as he’s busy fighting off hooligans to protect the life of a policeman and so must forgo the coveted prize.
Naved who is a manipulative media baron turns this to his advantage and builds up Suraj into a youth icon. He is aware of the fact that Suraj will do anything to get what he wants. And he offers Suraj all he’s ever wanted - a penthouse apartment, a fancy car, a high profile portfolio, power and fame.
Naved’s consort and right hand woman Lara Oberoi (Sushmita Sen) is instrumental in grooming the small town Suraj into a confident channel head. Soon Suraj has everything he dreamed of. Except love. Pooja walks out on Suraj because she can’t relate to this new over ambitious side to him. She warns him against Naved’s intentions but Suraj pays no heed to her. He has everything he ever wants, but soon his dream turns into a nightmare when he realises that his idol has feet of clay. Naved is just using him to release his political ambitions. That’s when Suraj strikes back and exposes Naved for the power hungry manipulator that he is and goes back to the woman of his dreams, Pooja.
