Producer: Rose Movies Director: Goldie Behl Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Sushmita Sen, Rani Mukherjee Music: Adesh Shrivastava
This was the most awaited film and the industry was expecting this film to catapult the career of Abhishek from a mere starkid to a star, but alas, this is not done. The film which was expected to help Abhi realize his dreams has failed to push his career any further and one cannot crossly blame him for the outcome.
Rookie director Goldie Behl, however, chooses to ignore the latter chapter in his Dummies' Guide to directing a film. For what could have been a decent flick otherwise crumbles before your very eyes. This is not what dreams are made of Goldie…there is much more to it. The story revolves around Suraj Srivastav (Abhishek Bachchan), an ambitious young man from Banares. He aspires to make it big in Mumbai like his idol, the media tycoon, Naved Ali (Jackie Shroff). While getting a foothold in his city of dreams, Suraj meets Pooja (Rani Mukherjee), a fellow college student and falls in love with her. His career takes off at the same time. Suraj finally meets Naved at a college function. He promises Naved that he will win the scholarship sponsored by him.
But his fate depends on the outcome of a 100-metre race to be held on the annual sports day. Suraj can’t make it to the starting line as he’s busy fighting off hooligans to protect the life of a policeman and so must forgo the coveted prize.
Naved who is a manipulative media baron turns this to his advantage and builds up Suraj into a youth icon. He is aware of the fact that Suraj will do anything to get what he wants. And he offers Suraj all he’s ever wanted -- a penthouse appartment, a fancy car, a high profile portfolio, power and fame. Naved’s consort and right hand woman Lara Oberoi (Sushmita Sen) is instrumental in grooming the small town Suraj into a confident channel head. Soon Suraj has everything he dreamed of. Except love. Pooja walks out on Suraj because she can’t relate to this new over ambitious side to him. She warns him against Naved’s intentions but Suraj pays no heed to her.

He has everything he ever wants, but soon his dream turns into a nightmare when he realises that his idol has feet of clay. Naved is just using him to realise his political ambitions. That’s when Suraj strikes back and exposes Naved for the power hungry manipulator that he is and goes back to the woman of his dreams, Pooja.
Script wise, the film had the potential to make it big, but what lacks is the treatment by debutante Goldie which shows signs of amateurship at times. Abhishek Bachchan is great in the author-backed role, but seems that he has been born with two left legs…cannot blame the boy alone for disaster, the choreographer and the garish costume added to the make it gaudy. Otherwise, his performance is quite polished and very original.
Jackie Shroff looks and plays the part of a manipulative media king to the tee. It is Sushmita Sen who is the surprise package in this film. The kind of oomph the girl can generate is sure to keep the house running full for weeks, her ooph can best be compared with that of Marilyn Monroe. A more lean and shapely Rani Mukherjee happens to be around adding the required glamour.
The supporting cast with Smita Jayakar, Gulshan Grover, Raman Lamba, Suchitra Pillai, and some guy who plays Goan-pao Phillip, are surprisingly good. Though Bachchan Junior has carried the burden of this film on his shoulders giving in his best, the film is likely to miss the register at the box office. We may have to wait for his next to see him take that leap to stardom.
