Movie Review : 16 December

Producer: Arunima Roy
Director: Mani Shankar
Cast: Milind Soman, Gulshan Grover, Danny Denzongpa
Music: Kartik Raja

Directed by Mani Shankar ‘16 December’ is a film on the financial crimes that are a source of fund of terrorism in many countries. With a story having patriotic zeal the film does have its moments. However in his strive to deal with a different story Mani Shanker uses terms that don’t come easy to the average cinegoer. The lilting part is the hype to this otherwise film that lacks soul.

The team of Danny Denzongpa and Milind Soman are on a mission to trace the criminals. Gulshan Grover is the mastermind in disguise who has brutal plans for India by exploding a nuclear bomb, which he has bought with the 'havala' money. December 16 is the date set to execute the crime. The film throws light on the 'havala' transactions and how the team of Indian soldiers tries to track the main antagonist.

The best part of the enterprise is the execution and special effects. Letting down the good work done is the bland screenplay. Soon after the film begins it appears tedious. Also the climax is not an apt ending and looks fragile. Much emphasis has not been paid to the music and it is also another let down. Songs don’t help the proceedings much and they are there only because they ought to be there. Dialogues are catchy and cinematography is brilliant. There’s no masala, turns and twists to keep you glued to the narration.

Danny Denzongpa excels with his role and comes up with a terrific performance. Gulshan Grover carries his part with conviction. Sushant does well. Milind Soman and Dipannita are average. Aditi Gowitrikar is insipid.

The film will not be welcomed warmly at the box office, as it doesn’t justify the taste of commercial cinema.
