Directed by Guddu Dhanoa ‘23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ is a heart wrenching saga of freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh. But how far Bollywood executionists are able to do justice to it remains a question in itself. The film boasts of a massive cast and the hype surrounding it leads to high expectations from it. But the end result is not as enthralling as it ought to be.

Let us deal with the plusses and minuses of the film one by one. To start with Shaheed Bhagat Singh's life has been shot in bits and pieces and the amalgamation of the scenes makes the screenplay of the film. It is disillusioning to find that the complete saga of his life is not presented here. Emphasis has been laid only the lead character Bhagat Singh while his comrades Sukhdev and Rajguru gets absolutely sidetracked. The second part is very lengthy with inconsistent pace hampering the proceedings. There are no emotional moments that touch you. What we are being served in the plate is a plain and mediocre film.

Writer Sutanu Gupta is a big letdown and hasn’t taken the pain to put the proceedings in details, assuming that the viewers would know the story only too well. The sequence of events, incidents and characters are narrated not very precisely and the viewers who don’t know about the life of Bhagat Singh may not understand the episodes. Dialogues by Sanjay Masoom are not fiery and there is no excitement in the plot.

Though the film begins very ordinary but it catches interest with the portrayal of the early years of the great freedom fighter. Director Guddu Dhanoa here has handled a few sequences deftly. Anand Raaj Anand's music is average. Thiru’s cinematography is striking. Action by Tinu Verma is top rate. Surinder Sodhi background music is moving.

Sunny Deol is competent while Bobby renders mediocre performance. Amrita Singh makes a comeback after long and leaves a mark with her performance. Rahul Dev and Vicky Ahuja don’t get much to do. Suresh Oberoi, Shakti Kapoor, Divya Dutta and Akshay Anand are okay.

Though it is a powerful saga, it doesn’t have the fire to ignite the heart of the viewers. The film falls short of expectations. While the film will supposedly do well in the North belts due to the presence of the Deols, overall impact will be dull.
