Produced and directed by S.Ramanathan who had given Amitabh Bachan his first break in ‘Bombay to Goa’, this movie talks about a woman’s fight to save her love from the mouth of death. Kareena Kapoor perfectly slips in to the character of the woman fighting for the life of her beloved. Music is by Viju Shah. Sameer writes the lyrics. In a serious movie like this there is no scope for music. So let us check out how does Viju Shah’s music fare here?
This album begins with a vibrant and enthusiastic musical track ‘Ore Baba Ola’. Shaan and Shreya Ghosal croon this rhythmic number. But Sameer’s lyrics are so boring and plain that it drags the whole song down with it.
‘Kya Mohabbat Hai’ is a techno qawali rendered by Alka Yagnik, Vinod Rathod and Javed Ali. The music is upbeat and is a blend of both Indian and Western music. This time Sameer gets his lyrics right. On the whole this song with good music, nice lyrics and great rendition makes for a good listening.
The funky mood continues with the next track ‘Teri Ankhen’. Like all the other Punjabi numbers this one too rides high on energy and pep. Punjabi song specialist Jaspinder Narula croons this song in her characteristic high-throated manner. Sudesh Bhonsle sings for Amitabh Bachan. Sonu Nigam has not much singing to do. But he does his bit perfectly. Even after all these good works this song gets in to our nerves and it makes us cranky.
‘Hum Bhoolenge’ has nothing much to boast about. Sudesh Bhonsle sleepwalks through this track with the help of Keya Dutta. With its soft music and disinterested rendition this song fails to enthuse us. On the whole this sleep inducing number can be pushed to the back burner.
Next song ‘Locha Lapacha’ will be known more for its non-sensual lyrics. Sameer once again blends some interesting words together and puts it forward as a lyric. Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan bears through this mockery of words. But it may not be the case with the listeners. They may not give any heed to this horrendous musical number.
The last song ‘O Yaa’ blends everything perfectly. Music is sensuously nice. Lyrics too follow the same track. Above all Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik render this naughty musical number effectively. This song with its old world charm and honeyed rendition makes for a good hear.
In conclusion ‘Zamaanat ‘ has nothing much to offer musically. Music is good. But Sameer’s lyrics make it unbearable. Hope the movie gains in popularity with its strong star cast and powerful story.
