Patriotism is the flavor of the season. Suddenly a number of production houses have come up with movies on the life valiant freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Each one has its own charm. This Raj Kumar Santoshi version boasts of high caliber music and performance. Ajay Devgan plays the lead whereas A.R.Rehman recreates the original charm of Bade Bulla Khan and Bhagat Singh verses.
The album starts with ‘Mera Rang De Basanti Chola’. This one is slower than the Manoj Kumar version of the same in his ‘Shaheed’. Sonu Nigam and Manmohan Waris render it perfectly. A.R.Rehman’s music adds a modern feel to this immortal Punjabi track.
‘Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna’ another eternal patriotic number has two versions. Sonu and Hariharan render the duet that appeals more to the heart. With the use of tabla, santoor and flute Rehman provides a classical touch to this slow and soft number. Sonu comes alone in the next track.
‘Shora So Panchaniye’ is a short rendition. But it is the most intense track of this album, both lyrically and musically. Karthik, Raquib and Sukhwinder Singh begin this song in a whispering tone, but the shouts of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ in the end add fervor to this track.
Sukhwinder’s ‘Pagdi Sambhal Jatta’ makes for a good hear. This is definitely going to linger on the lips of the listeners for days to come. Embellished with bhangra beats this song is high on energy and enthusiasm.
‘Desh Mere Desh’ comes in three versions. A.R.Rehman and Sukhwinder Singh croon the first one ‘Desh Mere Desh’. Lyrically this is the best of the three. Sukhwinder renders the other two versions ‘Dil Se Niklegi’ and ‘Kasam Tumko Watan’. These tracks are situational in feel and may sound well in the movie.
There are two romantic numbers in this album filled with patriotic songs. ‘Mahive Mahive’ and ‘Jogiya Jogiya’ are well rendered by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik . It has no significance in the context of the movie. It may not even find a place a movie.
By and large this album may not find too many takers. But once the movie is out this may get a wide acceptance even among the younger lots. ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Pagdi Sambhal Jatta’ and ‘Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna’ stand apart.
