Talented musician A.R.Rehman cannot ever escape from the heavy load of high expectation. Whatever he puts his hands on people expect it to be a success. And the interesting part is that he always comes out winner on all occasions. The same holds true of his compositions in Yash Chopra movie ‘Saathiya’. Gulzar provides him the music if the film. This is their first album together after the success of ‘Dil Se’. So get ready for a great musical treat.
As expected this album gets a rocking start with the title track ‘Saathiya’. From head to toe this sounds Rehmanian. Once again the master creator holds us with his innovative rhythmic beats. Sonu Nigam smoothly flows through this sweet and soft romantic track. In its picturisation Shaad Ali follows his mentor to the hilt and comes up with an enchantingly colorful song sequence. As always, the creative genius of Gulzar comes up with some of the finest poetical words to enhance the feel of the track. A nice beginning for a promising album.
‘Chalka Chalka’ is a kind of pre-wedding song. Here a group of girls from the bride’s side tries to pull the leg of groom and his friends. This one is full of masti and josh. Richa Sharma, Mahalakshmi, Vaishali and Shoma lend their voice to this teasing number.
Variety is the spice of life. No one knows this better than the master composer A.R.Rehman. So from his part he always tries to sound different in his albums. The same holds true for this collection too. After a playful number he suddenly changes the mood and pulls out a romantic melody. ‘Chupke Se’ crooned by Sadhana Sargam takes you to the heights of romantic proximity. Murtuza and Qadir support her in this semi –classical endeavor. This sweet and soft romantic song is an absolute heart warmer.
Asha Bhonsle shares her mike with newcomer Karthik Raja for a sensuous number ‘Chori Pe Chori’. It comes close to being an item track. Picturised on Shamita Shetty this song takes the story forward. The abundant use of African beats adds life to this song. To cut it short, this is another crowd puller from Rehman’s vast musical bank.
As the song ‘Aye Udi Udi Udi’ starts playing you are mesmerized by its nice and simple rhythmic music. The man with a silky voice Adnan Sami makes a roaring come back with this Rehman track. With its peculiar music and enthralling choreography this song makes for a nice musical feast. Rani and Vivek are in their romantic best. On the whole, this song hooks you with its magical charm.
‘O Hum Dum Suniyo Re’ on the other hand slowly and steadily makes its presence felt. KK, Shaan, Kunal and Pravin Mani come together for this pop number otherwise known as ‘Mangalyam’. The success of this song depends more on its presentation. The soft and silky voice of A.R.Rehman flows through this painful melody ‘Mera Yaar Mila De’. This one comes towards the end of the movie and enhances the mood of the climax.
And at the very last minute Rehman surprises us with a mujra like number ‘Naina Milake’. The music is so unbecoming of him that we check the label to clear our doubts. Unlike the rest of the numbers this one does not come easily on lips.
By and large, A.R.Rehman once again sweeps us off our feet with his unique compositions. But this time his songs lack the universal appeal that others had. ‘Aye Udi Udi’, ‘Saathiya’ and ‘Chori Pe Chori’ are the pick of the lot.
