Movie Review : Maine Dil Tujhko Diya (2002)

Producer: Bunty Walia, sohail Khan
Director: Sohail Khan
Cast: Sohail Khan, Sameera Reddy, Kabir Bedi, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt
Music: Daboo Malik

A child asks his parent for the moon and the parent presents the child with the reflection of the moon in a plate filled with water.

Very similarly the Khan brothers promised us the moon, and they have delivered the same in a platter. Indeed the moon is nothing but the reflection of the original thing.

Thus Maine Dil Tujhko Diya is yet another run of the mill story, a poor orphan, a rich daddy's girl, villains, hired goons, tons of action and music all bundled together makes for the young Khan’s debut.

Thus the plot takes you through the college where Ayesha (Sameera Reddy), the shy and stunning daughter of business tycoon Verma ( Kabir Bedi), is introduced to college heroes The Aryans, led by stud Ajay (Sohail Khan). Ayesha's doe eyes and unassuming disposition immediately finds favour with Ajay and his gang. Now before you know it a romantic duet at a college function extends their relationship and they are in love.

However, Verma is very unhappy at this union. Taking advantage, Verma's associate Chopra (Dalip Tahil) suggests his own son as a suitable guy for Ayesha. Chopra brainwashes Verma against Ajay and appoints the dangerous hit man Bhaijaan (Sanjay Dutt) and Co (Rajpal Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan) to badger Ajay. The outcome is a gory bloodbath between good and evil.

The excruciatingly lengthy and tedious climax is infused with mindless nonstop violence.

Director Sohail seems to have a penchant for action, however little does he realize that in the bargain he simply ignores the emotional aspect including developing on the love story which he is equally apt at. If one is to see the record of the director, his Auzaar failed, while Hello Brother which had comedy and action did better, while he triumphed with Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya which was a romantic movie. Time the enterprising director realize his true potentials and bank on it instead of depending on his heart say.

Musically, composer Daboo Malik's Thoda sa pyar hua hai and Maine dil tujhko diya are melodious. Kabir Lal's splendid cinematography stands out in this otherwise run of the mill product.

Director Sohail Khan, who also makes his debuts as an actor with this film however fails to make an impact. One cannot help but compare him to his two elder brothers Salman Khan and Arbaaz --- especially in the walk, talk, smile, gestures department.

Debutante Sameera Reddy has a charming screen presence. She shows potential, though Maine Dil Tujhko Diya does not any scope for her to present her performance. Definitely this was not an ideal launch for any actress, secondly Sameera and Sohail have zero onscreen chemistry.

Sanjay Dutt is simply wasted in Maine Dil Tujhko Diya. He proves an unnecessary twist in this story.

It is indeed a pity for this industry when young film makers dable in age old formulas.
