Abishek Bachan has pinned all his hopes on this Apoorva Lakhia movie ‘Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost’. This movie is about a remote village in Rajastan that still doesn’t have electricity. Abhishek plays the role of a city returned villager who brings with him the seed of a rebellion. Everything changes in the village after his arrival. Former beauty queen Lara Dutta plays the female lead. Anu Malik scores music for this rural reformation saga.
Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam start the proceedings with the song ‘Shaher Ka Jaado Re’. This is a teasing number featuring Lara Dutta and Abhishek Bachan. In the sequence Abhishek who is just back from town tries to impress Lara Dutta, the simple village belle by giving out a rosy picture about the life in town. But Lara does not fall for it because she loves her land more than anything. Anu Malik uses both traditional and modern instruments in the background. Music is very engrossing and energetic.
Alka and Sonu team up again for a soft and sweet love track ‘Mujhe Tune Jo Dekha’. This Rajastani folk based track takes some time to sink in. But once in, it stays there forever. On the whole this is a mesmerizing musical composition.
Next in line is ‘Saiyyan’ crooned by Sunidhi Chauhan. Her hoarse voice adds to the sensuous beauty of this track. Even then there is nothing much to talks about this song.
Sonu and Alka are repeated again here. They croon the Holi celebration track ‘Koi Bheega Hai Rang Se’. This song grows on you with its swiftly changing pace and rhythm. But its ordinary treatment makes this raga based track a failure.
After this ‘pheeka’ track it is the turn of a motivational song ‘Jeetenge Baazi Hum’. Sonu and Mahalakshmi give it a new life with their spirited rendition. Guest composer Ranjit Barot does the music. He blends both Indian and Western music to suit his musical purpose. This situational track turns out to be an enjoyable number in the end. The album concludes with an instrumental ‘The Journey’. Amar Mohile is the composer. This one too is situational in nature and perfectly fits in to the narration of the movie.
In short ‘Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost’ provides us with a variety of music. There is not one single song that stands apart. But it may become popular once the movie hits the theatres.
