Movie Review : Ajnabee (2001)

Producer: Vijay Galani
Director: Abbas Mastan
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Johny Lever,
Music: Anu Malik

Inspired by the Hollywood flick Concenting Adults, Abass-Mustan’s Ajnabee is a whodunit that tackles the novel and naïve issue of wife swapping on the sly.

Raj (Bobby Deol) and Priya (Kareena Kapoor) tie the knot after two meetings and set out for Switzerland, where Raj is supposed to participate in a polo match. There the couple’s neighbours are Vicky (Akshay Kumar) and Sonia (Bipasha basu) a friendship is struck between these two couples and Vicky convinces Raj and Priya to holiday with them in Mauritius. And the action begins.

The friendship turns bitter when Vicky proposes that they swap wives for fun. Raj nearly comes to blows, however they cut the holiday short and return home. Back at home Raj forgive Vicky for his comment when he relentlessly apologises. As a patch-up, Vicky invites the couple on his birthday where they get drunk and once again he proposes swapping wives to Raj.

Thus Vicky walks into Raj’s room while Raj knocks on Vicky’s door that night. However the next day one of them is found dead.

Now this is the most I can reveal without letting you on the suspence, however it is really pity that the duo who made such a thrilling suspense like Khiladi have let the cat loose within few minutes of the second half of the movie.

We agree that the concept is very novel and never before tried on Indian screen, however one cannot deny its existing in the society, at least in the upper strata, hence there are chances of general audience not finding it comfortable as they may not relate to it.

Secondly the film’s concept could have been handled with more care. Ajnabee is about the evil within. Ajnabee is about crimes of love and passion, it is about small guys dreaming big and small guys in a hurry. Yet, despite the dangerous edge to the drama, the film lacks the razor sharpness of a thriller. What's worse, the filmmakers have exposed the most significant 'turning point' through the televised promos and the Mehbooba song.

There are no dizzy trips into the darker side of the human psyche. No innovative takes on the hero-as-villain as we had seen in Baazigar with a devilish Shah Rukh walking away with the accolades, despite his devilish ways. And no crooked curves and bends into the unknown and unimagined: the highpoint of any thriller.

Instead, the director duo seems to be so smitten by the scenery of their film, they almost forget the singing, dancing, skiing and para sailing needs to be hinged around a story.

Kareena Kapoor, in her most glamorous role to date, sizzles in the seductive number, Mujhko neend aa rahi hain, with Akshay Kumar. Her fine flair for comedy is on display at the scene in the supermarket with Bobby.

Bipasha Basu makes a decent debut. She looks stunning, she has the oomph, acts well and has an awesome screen presence. But Akshay Kumar is the surprise package of the film. He looks smashing and is in total control with his shades of gray

The comic relief, spearheaded by Johny Lever, is loud and distractive.

All in all, Ajnabee’s attempt at being bold goes overboard and fails to even comeout a pure thriller. For one more time, Abbas-Mustan have failed as they had with Daraar. However do watch the movie for its novel concept and the sexy Bipasha Basu who makes her debut.
