Movie Review : Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai (2001)

Producer: Vashu Bhagnani
Director: Satish Kaushik
Cast: Tusshar Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor
Music: Anu Malik

Once again a star gives his son in the able hands of a reputed producer and an equally reputed director to let the world know the coming of yet another star. The producer picks up a hit film from the south and remakes it (after all the aspirants father did have his time of glory thanks to the remakes of his time)Thus the film is the remake of the Telegu hit Tholi Prema.

However, the film Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, the film literally tries to live upto its title as a showcase to the aspirations of a lad wanting to make it big in filmdom.
The film was supposed to be a platform which would launched Jeetendra’s puttar Tusshar, but it does not happen so. The film in no way is able to give Jeetendraputtar Tusshar the much needed push. It only manages to launch him. And the director Satish Kaushik is left screeming Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, alas no one is there to listen to him.

The story revolves around Karan (Tusshar) a daredevil trying to solve problems of everyone, getting friends married irrespective of whether they are children of mantris or santris and beating up goondas who tease his sister Priya (Rinke Khanna). With that done, Satish seems to be happy at establishing that he is hero material since he does everything good for the people around him.

This could have been fine, but Satish goes above the top in establishing him as hero to the extent of exhibiting that he possessing certain super powers when he shows that our Karan even manages to get up and beat all the villains even after he is gonged on the head with a hockey stick. Now that sure is too much.
Anyway this establish, Karan then falls in love with an NRI who seems to be good at everything she does. She is here on a mission to study the culture of the country. Now, never heard of an NRI wanting to do that? Where are those culture schools and then instead of coochi-cooing with Tusshar she should have met our ex-culture police to know about our culture, right?
So this girl, Pooja is out here in Delhi wearing hot pants and trying to study the culture of India by coochi-cooing with Tusshar and leading her way into his home and family.

Our brave Tusshar looses all guts when it comes to the matter of the heart and he can muster no guts to propose to a girl, especially an NRI. So much so that even in the end.... Oh well, just see that when and if you go to watch the film.

Anyway watching the cinematic liberties and continuity jerks makes you feel like a jerk yourself and you may want to move out of the cinema hall for a breath of cigratte smoke…for that is what you could expect in the lobby as most would be doing in so when they are bored with this film.
Anyway, Karan who is a good guitar player is playing a drum when Pooja dances at his college function. You may want to ask the director as to what is Pooja doing in his college and why is he playing drums instead of a guitar and as you are still deciding on how exactly to frame that question you would have yet another addition to your question to set drafting it again, for Pooja presents our Tusshar with a ‘trumpet’.

All is fine in the movie like Karan and his family shuttle from Delhi to a temple at Karla Caves (near Lonavala) as if it was at their street corner. Oh, now we know what jet age means.
Now, the movie not making it as a hit is a foregone conclusion, but you need not worry as Vashu seems to have made some money from Coke, through in-film advertising and promoted Hrithik apart from Tusshar in the film in a big way.

Tusshar needs to improve and he better do that fast, Kareena Kapoor does nothing but look damn good, Amrish Puri as Karan's 'tau' is lovable, some of the dialogues are funny, and Pooja is again the name of the heroine of producer Vashu Bhagnani.

Now one may explain that Jeetendra’s first hit Farz caught on only after six weeks and became a huge hit. Hope Tusshar get his father's luck and his film survives the six weeks in cinema halls and history repeats itself. We heartly hope it happens so, for we do need some competition in this Bollywood arena which seems to be suffering from a certain mania lately.
