After ‘Earth’ and ‘Zubeidaa’ A.R. Rahman arrives with the music of another periodic film ‘Lagaan’ and we’ve to admit to it that he is getting better with the music of every film. But this time it’s no ordinary music. ‘Lagaan’ is a masterpiece. He wonderfully blends Indian classical, folk, and Western classical music to create the mood of the film. Lapped up with equally exuberating lyrics of Javed Akhtar, it seems like sounds of sheer pleasure.
Rahman’s ode to rain is the first track of the album ‘Ghanan Ghanan’. An exceptional song that captivates the essence of rain with Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Sukhwinder Singh, Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan, and Kishori Gowariker infusing life in to it. An outstanding piece of music to begin the soundtrack with.
Another song at its melodious best is ‘Mitwa’. With chorus and powerful percussion rightly blending with it, this is a song with patriotic fervor. Nice romantic interludes favor the song. Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Sukhwinder Singh and Srinivas sing the song with amazing brilliance,
‘Chale Chalo’ with Rahman and Srinivas at the helm succeeds in building the strength of passion and unity in your heart just like the song intends to. With powerful percussion and great melody, here is another number that is pleasurable to the ear.
To the already rich and gleaming soundtrack ‘Radha Kaise Na Jale’ comes as a gem. It’s a song of the boy teasing the girl in religious analogy and has been designed in an antiquated manner and this makes it all the more pleasurable to listen. Asha Bhonsle is a revelation in this number and takes a break from her routinous item songs. Udit Narayan also graces the song and is at his best here. A song you can treasure in your memory.
Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik come together for the song ‘O Rey Chhori’ with Vasundhara Das lending some English chippings in between. The song gains appeal with the three singers doing their interesting bit. A melodious love song laced with novel instruments that makes it cut above the rest.
A beautiful bhajan to soothe your soul is brought up by Lata Mangeshkar. She sings it comfortably and with ease and the efforts reflect in the manner the song touches you. Udit Narayan supports her ably with his soft and soothing rendition. You surely feel blessed hearing this.
A.R. Rahman demonstrates his skill and insight into music composing the two varied instrumental tracks. Strings grouped in ‘Waltz for a Romance’ is so beautiful that you feel as if you’re transported to a different world altogether. Title theme is also a pleasure listening with Anuradha Sriram crooning to this instrumental track.
‘Lagaan’ is a tour de force of Rahman that gives him a legendary status way above the other composers of Bollywood. It’s true great music in every sense breaking away from the formulaic mould of Bollywood films. With such music, the interest to watch the film only doubles.
