Director Sakthi Selvam sets his romantic story in pre-independent India. Oliyum Oliyum unfolds in a remote Tamil village in the late 1940s in which a youth falls for a woman. Several hurdles and obstacles later the man gets her. Not an original idea certainly, but the narration could have made all the difference.
Sakthi Selvam has a story to work on but squanders away the chance of telling it with conviction. The scenes unfold abruptly and seemed patched up at the most.
Oliyum Oliyum has of a host of newcomers and each one has his/her task cut out. Have they performed it to perfection? That is the question. Noted social worker ‘Palam’ Kalyanasundaram and actor Anandh Babu form part of the cast.
Ramu (Prabha) is a happy-go-lucky youngster, who spends his time hanging out with his friends. One day, he meets Selvi (Aswathy), the daughter of a rich landlord in the village and instantly falls for her.
She reciprocates but with a condition that they should get married only after India attains independence. Enters Gopal (Mohan), Ramu’s friend from Chennai. A womaniser, Gopal wants to marry Selvi. What ensues is a cat and mouse game between the two men.
Newcomer Yani Desh has come up with tunes for lyrics penned by Sakthi Selvam himself. The cinematography is by Ravi. Produced by Raju Venkatraman and Sivakumar Balasubramanian, the movie has a very amateurish feel to it.
