Movie Review : Khushi

Producer: Boney Kapoor
Director: S.J. Suryah
Cast: Kareena Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Amrish Puri, Johny Lever, Navin Nischol, Beena, Sharat Saxena
Music: Anu Malik

‘Khushi’ is a normal love story produced by Boney Kapoor and is a remake of a Tamil film by the same name directed by S.J. Suryah. In between the glitz and glamour it’s the wafer thin storyline that sees through the film. It looks like assemble of bits and pieces of some scenes put together. ‘Khushi’ has its moments of fun and emotions and this makes you like it.

The film begins with Karan (Fardeen Khan) and Khushi (Kareena Kapoor) and their story. They love each other but due to their ego hassles they never express their feelings. Karan belongs from Calcutta and Khushi is from a village in Gadhwal, UP. Karan is ambitious to go to Canada for further studies but due to an accident he gets held up. Khushi's father (Amrish Puri) thinks that his daughter is enough educated and it is the right time to search a groom for her who is also willing to be a ghar jamai. But he lets her go when she insists that she wants to pursue her studies. They meet when they go to pursue their education in Mumbai University through common friends. Their friends love each other and it is now upon them to bring them closer. And trying to do so, they fall in love with each other. But their egos never let them express their love and they understand what a terrible mistake they have committed when its time for the farewell.

The film begins and treads as a general love story but it the approach to the film that makes a difference. The treatment is fantastic and the stylish shots laces the film with beautiful moments. The rift between the pair in the first part of the film is thoroughly enjoyable. Having said that it’s the post-interval portions that mar all the efforts. Unwanted songs and same kind of fighting scenes makes the going very dull.

S.J. Suryah makes his mark with his good handling and superbly crafted emotions in the film. He executes the scenes well but it is the less substantial script of the second portions that cripples the impact. Anu Malik's lets out chartbusting scores and adds to the quality in the film with colorful picturisations. Choreographer Ganesh Hegde, Prabhu Deva and sets by Omung Kumar fetches full marks for their efforts. K.V. Guhan's cinematography is first rate. Dialogues by Bholu Khan, Aman Jafrey are apt.

Kareena Kapoor beautifully dons her character in the film. She carries off this role that requires her to be glamorous, jazzy, loud and emotional at the same time. Fardeen Khan also surprises you with his good work. He leaves his mark in this heroine-dominated film. He looks good and emotes well too. Amrish Puri entertains but Johny Lever doesn’t get much to do.

It’s a fun and entertaining film for the young and old alike and should engage the family audiences as well.
