Producer: S. Taurani Director: Kundan Shah Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Preeti Zinta, Chandrachur Singh, Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal Music: Rajesh Roshan
This is a ladies film all the way. The film is based on the sensitive saga of a young unwed mother who is being ostracized by the society at large and not even spared by her own peer group.
The story revolves around Priya Bakshi (Prity Zinta), young daughter of Gulshan Bakshi (Anupam Kher) and Rohini (Farida Jalal), dotting sister of Vikram, Kabir and Bobby (Mamik, Puneet and Amit Mistry) Bakshi. Priya is loved and adored by the whole family. Ajay (Chandra Chur Singh) is the childhood friend of Priya who falls in love with her at the threshold of youth. Priya ignorant of Ajay’s feeling is attracted towards the college playboy Rahul (Saif Ali Khan) and falls deeply in love with him. But to Rahul, Priya is just another conquest. Priya gets Pregnant and takes the bold decision to have the baby. What follows thereafter sums up the rest of the plot.
The film very aptly conveys today’s youth’s ‘no guilt’ feeling to pre-marital sex. Similarly it also conveys the rational decisive attitude of the today’s women of substance, where Priya not only decides to have the baby but given the choice to choose between the biological father and childhood friend who understands her she chooses the later.
The film gives a very bold outlook to this issue, unlike previously made films on the same subject. Prity Zinta has lived her role with conviction, presenting some sure fire histrionics at the emotional scenes. Saif has equally played a convincing playboy, while Chandrachur has supported very well. Anupam Kher as the father has performed his part with equal zeal, both the comedy end of the role as well as the emotional angle. Farida Jalal, Navneet Nishan, Mamik, Deven Varma and Daisy Irani has provided the much needed support.
High production values are visible in each frame. Cinematography is soothingly evocative. Crisp editing maintains the grip while action is routine. Musically Rajesh Roshan has come up with lilting numbers. Kundan Shah has handled the emotional and dramatic angle with equal ease as he does with his comedy.
Though the film may look to be very woman oriented on the surface, the message is universal, men need to try this one as well. Don’t miss it.
