Movie Review : Meghatheertham (2009)

Producer: Salim P.T, Shaji Nadesan
Director: Unni
Cast: Manikuttan, Sreeraman, Saikumar, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Siddiq, Aparna, RathishyaHariharan
Music: Sharath

An old tale, the story begins on a flashback where a boy (manikuttan) is in love with a girl (aparna) and their intimacy makes the girl pregnant. Both of them are musicians but then destiny strikes and both of them get separated. Life goes on and the girl gives birth to a boy who grows up to be a musician himself (siddiq). Now, he doesn't want to see his father (saikumar) for obvious reasons and this leaves his mother (kaviyoor ponnamma) in a state of sadness. However, things change and whatever issues he has get sorted out, what happens from there forms the rest of the story.

The director has attempted to come up with a musical classic but it has worked nowhere. The presentation was alright but the narrative was not captivating. Dialogues were dull, the script was too melodramatic, the screenplay was okay. The real soul of the film is the music with excellent background score and songs, cinematography was alright to an extent. Costumes and art department made their presence felt and were effective. Kaviyoor Ponnamma gave a standard performance but the real impact was given by Saikumar though his presence was limited, Siddique was excellent, Manikuttan was neat, Aparna was pretty and good with her act, Bindu was neat, the others did their bit as per the standard.

The film was hyped to be on par with the Telugu masterpiece 'Sankarabharanam' but it must be said that there is no comparison between that and this one. The movie fails to engage the audience at any given point of time except the songs. Writing is the culprit here since there are many loose ends. While the first half goes about with the flashback romance etc, the second half is about the melodrama and the emotional scenes. Overall, the film has not got any element that can appeal to any genre of audience. This one will sink in no time.
