‘Jhankaar Beats’ is an experimental film of sorts produced by Pritish Nandy Communications', written and directed by newcomer Sujoy Ghosh. Essaying the lead role are Sanjay Suri, Juhi Chawla, Rahul Bose, Rinkie Khanna, Shayan Munshi and Riya Sen. The film relies basically on the treatment, as there is no story to narrate as such.

Deep (Sanjay Suri) and Shanti (Juhi Chawla) are a happy married couple with a daughter Muskaan. Shanti is pregnant and expecting her second child. Deep's best friend is Rishi (Rahul Bose) and he works in the same advertising firm. But Rishi is having a low in his personal front as his marriage with his wife Nicky (Rinke Khanna) has hit rocks. They have filed for divorce and will be through it soon. There is one more thing that binds Deep and Rishi together, their love for music. They have been performing in a music competition named Jhankaar Beats since the last two years and have been loosing it. They are optimistic about their win this time but are looking for a guitarist. They find a guitarist in Neel (Shayan Munshi) who also happens to be their boss's son. Neel loves Preeti (Riya Sen) but is scared to express his love for her. He has to marry within two months and has been asked to see a girl for himself.

But with the competition approaching these guys have to practice. At the same time Deep and Rishi get a big project in their firm and there is pressure on them to complete it. Loosing the project means loosing their job as well. Neel also becomes a part of the project.

Sujoy Ghosh weaves tale of romance, humour, success and failure of the life of the three couples and presents to us a film that is thoroughly enjoyable and something different in commercial realm. But a film of such genre is not without its share of flaw. The details in the film are not elaborate and so common cinegoer may find it difficult to grasp it. For instance the film revolves round the music event ‘Jhankaar Beats’ and the life of the lead characters rotate round it. But Sujoy Ghosh never stresses to make the viewers understand that it is a gala music event. Again he partially deals more on the relation on Sanjay Suri – Juhi Chawla and leaves the other two. Rinke’s reason to divorce looks amateur. Blame it on the scripts and the characters for the poor detailing in the film. The screenplay is shoddy and there is no denying it. Also owing to Hindi and English dialogues merged together, it might become difficult for the commoners to understand the film. No doubt that dialogues by Milap Zaveri, Sujoy Ghosh are good and enhance the appeal with the crisp tongue. Vishal – Shekhar’s scores are also not up to mark.

In spite of all this shortcomings Sujoy Ghosh doesn’t cease to impress you. He has handled the scenes with deftness. With a good script in hand he can surely make a better film. Cinematography by Mazhar Kamran, editing is amazing. Sanjay Suri and Rahul Bose put up a good performance. Juhi Chawla is also likeable. Rinke Khanna also impresses. Shayan Munshi and Riya Sen don’t leave an impact.

The film will cater more to the urban audience due to its look and feel and multiplex business will soar in comparison to the rest of the country.
