Interview : Akshay Kumar on a roll!

Things are on a roll for Akshay Kumar with the actor bagging kudos from left, right and center. This year sees the actor get back to his action gears for films like ‘Chandni Chowk To China’ and ‘Blues’. Also at hand is a Hollywood offer and a chance to rap with American rapper Snoop Dog. His latest release ‘Tashan’ may have proved to be a damp squib at the box-office, but Akshay Kumar, nevertheless, walked away with all the laurels at the end of the show. In this heart-to-heart conversation with Bollywood master blaster Akshay Kumar, we find out more about his films, life and action.

Here are the Excerpts:

Bangkok is like second haven to you, isn’t it?

Well, almost. I’m mostly here for work. I’ve already shot for two short films till now in Bangkok and looking forward to start with the third one. The city has changed a lot over the years. Only the traffic continues to be a big botheration till date. This city makes me truly nostalgic of my past days.

You are all set to make your big small screen debut?

Well, I didn’t accept the offer for the fat pay package or just for unnecessary publicity. I joined the show because it’s an action packed one and I’m a sucker for action.

But the participants are mostly women. Does that hint towards more of a catfight than some real action?

Not really. And even if it’s there, I don’t think that it would put the show in a bad taste. Catfights and all that is surely to be put on ice on a show that promises nothing but pure action, kickass action.

Is your family comfortable with the idea of you returning back into action now?

Well, they have just got adjusted to it now. Now they no longer fuss over such issues.

All your next ventures are kick-hard action flicks. Have you deliberately chosen to part away with comedy now?

Well, that’s not the case at all. I’m juggling with both the genres simultaneously. Chandni Chowk To China, which can be rightly said to be my autobiography, is a light-hearted entertainer with liberal helping of action. Then Singh Is Kinng is also pure comedy.
Blue is a complete action entertainer though.  Think doing action is lot more easy than dabbling with comedy where you always run the risk of goofing things up.

Blue sees you performing some underwater stunts a la Jaws, right?

Well, that’s pure fiction. Yes, we’ve tried out a few stunts but it would be too unlikely to compare it with Jaws.

You were missing from the promos of Tashan with the spotlight cast at Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor?

Let’s get things straight. I wasn’t in town when the promos of Tashan were being shot as I was here in Bangkok. So there’s no question of who got more footage and who didn’t.

How did it feel winning all the applause for Tashan?

I’m happy. But the very fact that the film didn’t do a great business makes me realize that I still have a long way to go.

Are you playing Tatya Tope?

I’m not doing that film.

And why did you walk out of Billo Barber?

Look, I wasn’t offered the film. Then how can I walk out of the film?

Are you doing Vipul Shah’s London Dreams?

No, I’m not doing that. In a year more than 200 films are made. I can at best be a part of two or three films.
