Interview : Right now, Abhishek is winning

Abhishek Bachchan is taking one great leap in his career to the other. ‘Yuva’ catapulted Abhishek to star status and after that ‘Sarkar’, ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ and ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ things are just looking brighter and better for him. With Mani Ratnam’s ‘Guru’, Yash Raj Films ‘Dhoom 2’, J. P Dutta’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ and Shaad Ali’s ‘Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom’ releasing this year his career takes another leap forward.

Excerpts from the Interview:

Rishi's character in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna has earned rave reviews. How do you feel about it?

It’s one of the important roles of the film. My character goes through so much trials and tribulations of marriage. I did expect people to react positively to Rishi because he is written as the most sympathetic character. Doing the role was not easy, as I didn’t have any knowledge about the relationship called marriage. I depended on Karan and followed his directions sincerely. I’m very happy for him that the film has done well. He has got what he wanted from the film. It has touched all and people are talking about it - positive or negative.

That calls for double celebration with Amitabh Bachchan bagging the National Award for Black.

Well it’s not official yet and he hasn’t heard anything about it. So I can’t say anything at this point.

You’re endorsing many products. Would you consider endorsing a soft drink?

It won’t be honest enough on my part to endorse a product I do not use. I stopped drinking colas two years ago and so I won’t endorse it. I endorse only those brands that I love and use, like my phone and I wouldn’t tie up with any other brand. Also my father’s contract with the cola company has ended.

Do you think that communications and technology has made us dependant on them?

Rather I feel communications has advanced to such an extent that we can't do without it. You can basically run your life through your phone. I think soon they'll manufacture phones that can make coffee and launch satellites! I have a special dedicated phone which only my dad and I share which is on 24 hours.

Which is the film you’re currently shooting for?

I’m shooting for Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Barabar Jhoom for which I go to London this weekend. It’s a six-week schedule in London and Paris. I have got a get up with this beard for the role. I’ll get back to India for the release of JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan. JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan

Tell us about your forthcoming releases.

Any actor getting to work with Mani is lucky. I’ve worked with him twice and I’m twice lucky. He’s a sheer pleasure to work with. Rest assured when you work with a director of Mani’s calibre he’s going to challenge you into discovering new areas of your personality. This is what has happened in Guru. Working with Mani is a huge learning experience. Dhoom 2 belongs to the same genre as the first Dhoom flick. I’d like to believe that we’ve managed to make it bigger and better. But Dhoom 2 and Umrao Jaan are my two new releases. The two are worlds and cultures apart. Right now I’m shooting for Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom with Preity and Lara Dutta in London. It’s great fun. I’m also doing Goldie Behl’s second, Drona.
